Worse Neuropathy After EMG Test?

Posted by joslyn @joslyn, Jan 8, 2022

I had an EMG test done four days ago, and my neuropathy pain has been MUCH MUCH worse the last three days. Anyone else? Suddenly, none of my creams, meds, and devices work to reduce the burning and tingling. What can I do???

Sorry to hear that. My EMG did not cause any increase in pain. I don’t understand the connection. Maybe research it on line!

Hi - I had one last week just to my left arm (because neuro overlooked doing that arm when he did other 3 limbs last year) Anyway, I did have increased neuropathy pain for 1 day, but it subsided, as with similar times with 6 other EMG’s over 5 years. I realize I am just one data point, and a purpose of this site is to learn from others, whether from their experience or their research, to see if it might be helpful for others. Last week somebody posted the benefit they got from emu oil. I had some, so decided to try it this week, and I feel it gave me quick relief! I plan to use it again if confronted with exceptional need, as I’m hoping for relief each time I use it and don’t want to get numb from the benefits.

I've had to EMG/NCS tests and did not notice any change in symptoms afterward.

I to experienced increased symptoms of neuralgia after having an EMG. My symptoms had virtually disappeared after starting starting duloxetine and vitamin d a few months ago. I started noticing the buzzing sensation in my feet and legs two days after the EMG - which was unremarkable. The sensation is worse today, 3 days post EMG.

Peripheral neuropathy both feet. Has anyone had experience with Duloxitine? And if so, what kind of results did you have? Looking, hoping, praying for some kind of positive results. Thank you all for all of your information. Hot day in Colorado here.!!

I took duloxitine for my neuropathy for several months. It did give me more energy and reduce pain a bit but it did also give me side effects which I cannot bare including constant red and dry eyes and difficulty urinating.

Regarding EMG inducing more pain, I'm not sure if this has to do with overstimulation of nerve. I had a pulmonology function test done a couple of weeks ago, right after the test I experienced severe fatigue and pain that lasted several days. I guess my neuropathic body was simply very sensitive to any unusual external force and exertion.

The somatosensory evoked potentials test provoked a painful relapse of my peripheral neuropathy that lasted for months. I have not had worsening of symptoms after any of my regular EMG tests.

Is that med the same as cymbalta? Why did you take an EMG? Isn’t it very painful? It sends electric shocks through your body?

REPLY

Did you find that the EMG test is extremely painful?
It’s electric shocks thru your body to find nerve damage?

REPLY

I haven't found any of my 5 EMG tests to be that painful, although I guess some people do. I did find the somatosensory evoked potentials test to be quite painful because the shocks are administered for a long time to a single damaged nerve.
