Worsening pain in my knees

Posted by ashpen @ashpen, Dec 5, 2021

I'm finishing up 6 weeks of physical therapy and I'm going to see my orthopedic physician on the 15th. I brushed off being in worse pain for the first few weeks. It still feels like the pain in my knees is getting worse and now I am popping more than before. As well as falling more due to my knees giving out. What should I do? Should I tell my pt or should I wait and tell my orthopedic physician?

@ashpen, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your message to the active Chronic Pain group here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/pain/ I did this so you can connect with others.

I might suggest that you contact your PT and between now and your appointment on the 15th keep a journal about your pain to discuss with your orthopedic physician. Take note of the intensity of the pain, the time of day and any activity you were doing at the time, etc.

While we wait for others to join in the discussion, can you tell me a bit more about yourself? What is the cause of pain? Do you have a diagnosis? Is the pain only in your knees?

Well, cause according to my orthopedic physician, my hamstrings are to tight and quads are to lose. This leaving pulling on left knee cap. Right knee has damage from supporting left.
Physician therapist said because of family history and how laxative my knee cap is and my level of flexibility I may have hypermobility disorder or ehlers danlos. But, he only mentioned that once.
So right now would say they have ideas no definite diagnosis. My knees are main focus now cause they give out sometimes. But I have a little issue with my ankles, hips, elbows, and shoulders.
I always doing alot and I have lately gotten hurt alot more then I use to a couple years ago but, I have also gotten more flexibility. I have sprained my wrist multiple times, my ankle once, and my shoulder once. I have dislocated my shoulders multiple times.

Told my pt last week but, seemed she just brushed it off as soreness.

Depending on your age and the age of the P/T, I hope one day she understands exactly what we experience with pain and brushing it off as "soreness" will hopefully not come back to haunt her.

@ashpen Hello and welcome. I would imagine your orthopedic doctor took x-rays first then sent you to physical therapy for strengthening. PT is a beginner step to see if it can help enough. I'm sorry it hasn't provided the relief you hoped for.

You mentioned you are always doing a lot and have noticed change in your body over the past two years....your knee must be giving you the business for it. It's hard to slow down, but always best to listen to our bodies without pushing.

Are you seeing your orthopedic doctor again on the 15th? Perhaps an MRI is in order.
Do you mind letting me know the outcome of your upcoming appointment?

Yes, on the 15th I am seeing my orthopedic physician and I plan on telling her because I have fell twice this week and before I only almost fell once or twice a month. Sure I don't mind sharing the appointment outcome.

Best of luck.

Your PT sounds correct about ehlers danlos and your PCP should refer you for genetic testing plus an exam for this.

They changed my appointment to the 28th, it's so irritating.
