I have a hiatal hernia and chronic diarrhea but it’s not from the meds and I take the omaprozole only. I wonder if just the hernia itself could cause the diarrhea? No body can figure out what is causing the diarrhea and I’ve had every stool test the have done on me. It’s crazy. I’ll let you know if they come up with an answer for the diarrhea when I see the surgeon Tuesday. That’s the only Dr I haven’t seen yet!!!!!! Good luck. Keep me posted and I’ll do the same.

I live on Ultra Pepto daily,7 years .. and I still have diarrhea 2-3 x day and chronic digestive disorders. I’ve been on everything snd had every test done ✅ and re done .
Just got back from Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to re do many tests .
Same 6 diagnoses, still can’t figure me out and still sick every day and night .
I wish you much luck 🍀.

Hi @rajoy1, Sorry you are having trouble with your medication. I would definitely recommend calling your doctor to see if there is a different combination of medicine that you can take besides omeprazole and gaviscon. Let them know that your digestive system cannot handle them.
Have you called them yet about this problem?

Nothing changed , I’m still as bad if not worse than ever .
I cannot believe the amount of gas my body makes day and night but especially at night . It’s so loud it would wake the dead ☠️. I deep wet belch over 3000 x a day and night . Tastes like sewer water . I can’t eat anything w/o suffering and if I have empty stomach it’s just as bad if not worse .
I’m like a medical mystery to 5 Gastro Dr’s at this point . It’s chronic and it’s real and I have 6 diagnoses but they can’t give me anything to control or help . I eat and drink so clean too .
I wish you luck 🍀. I’m praying one day to be healed but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen.

I’m trying to keep the faith . Both kids have big weddings in 2022 . !!

Could the hiatal hernia be the cause of low iron and need for ferritin infusion?

Jump to this post

Hi. I have a large hiatal hernia that didn't give me problems until recently. I had low iron last year for months. I started taking an iron tablet each day but then stopped. Last Jan. I had routine blood work and my hemoglobin had dropped to about 6.4 and I had to get to the er for a blood transfusion. They also ordered an endoscopy the next day and found that I had ulcers and Cameron ulcers on the hernia which I guess is not that unusual. The ulcers were bleeding which turned out to be the cause of my very low hemoglobin. The Eliquis (blood thinner) I take for afib contributed to the slow bleed. Otherwise, the results of the endoscopy were OK. The gastroenterologist increased my dosage of protonix to twice a day. The ulcers healed and my blood count went back up. I wasn't able to take my eliquis until my hemoglobin got up to 10 which took several months. I didn't realize how bad I was feeling until after the transfusion. Kind of snuck up on me. Before, I was feeling so tired and out of breath. A follow up endoscopy showed the ulcers had healed but I still have to watch this hernia thing. This may not be the case for you but I thought I would share.

I was first diagnosed with anemia and was given both blood transfusion and iron infusion. About 8 months later I had the worst experience with extreme nausea & vomiting and went to hospital emergency and was diagnosed with a "peach" sized hiatal hernia. I was given two options: immediate surgery due to the effect of my stomach slipping into the hernia or laparoscopic surgery a "fundoplication." I had to wait 6 agonizing weeks before being scheduled - during that time I ate very small meals and baby food -nothing that could get stuck like bread. It's been over five years and so far no issues. Hernia's can grow and the anemia that I had was probably due to stomach bleeding. My advice is to find out from an experienced laparoscopic doctor it your hernia can be treated!

Sounds like me after my hiatal surgery. Finally took xifaxan and finally got relief. It’s usually prescribed for SIBO or IBS. The doctor’s took a shot after nothing else helped. They feel I had SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth) Hope this information helps.

Been long tested 2 hr SIBO tests and H Pylori tests plus 15 others in 10 years.
Neg for all that but def have the other 7 diagnoses on record .
I’ve been on Xifaxan 3 x in 10 years just to try it . Nope 👎.
It’s ongoing battle for sure . Glad you feel better!
