Tendonitis in knee after TKR: Anything I can do to ease the pain?

Posted by janicemmccarthy @janicemmccarthy, Nov 20, 2021

The last 4 days I have been unable to walk or stand on my left leg. I had a TKR in January of 2020. The pain is so severe I went to my doctor. He diagnosed it as tendonitis in my left knee on the right side. OTC meds and tamarol are not even denting the pain. I am elevating and icing it and resting. Still the same amount of pain. Anything else I can do to ease the pain and be able to walk?

Hi @janicemmccarthy, I'm sorry to hear you are having pain after your knee replacement which is normally why you have a knee replacement - to fix or get rid of the pain. I am fortunate in that my TKR from a couple of years ago has went well for me. Here's some information I found that may be helpful.

Have you talked with your doctor or surgeon to see if physical therapy may help?

I finished physical therapy at the end of October before the tendonitis showed up. He said he didn't want to put me in PT again. The pain is so severe that I am having trouble walking and I can not sleep no matter how I place my leg.

You mentioned you are icing and elevating the knee but still having the same amount of pain. I had issues with swelling after my TKR and told my surgeon I was icing and elevating, which I was, but after talking with the surgeon I discovered we had two different ideas of what icing and elevating meant. I was icing and elevating two or three times daily for about 15 to 20 minutes and he told me it wasn't enough, especially the elevating part. He said if I was sitting down I should be elevating the leg and he also wanted me to do the icing a little more than the two or three times daily.

I'm sure you have already talked with your doctor about still having the pain. From what I have read it can take 4 to 6 weeks of resting for the tendonitis to get better. What helped me with the sleeping was elevating my leg. I tried several methods, but what worked best for elevating my leg was putting a folded up blanket under the mattress at the bottom of the bed to raise the foot of the bed slightly.

Can you talk with your doctor or surgeon to see if they have any suggestions?
