Gabapentin dosage for trigeminal neuralgia?

I take 1,800 milligrams as well. It does help my pain somewhat (I have small fiber neuropathy). I still have pain though. My neurologist also had a compound pharmacy make me a pain compound. The first one wasn’t strong enough so they made me a stronger one. It’s expedited $170 a pump bottle. It helps but I am never pain free. The Gaberpentin does give me horrible brain fog but I I don’t think I could survive without it.

Did you report the constant pain to your physician?

Hello @speercntry, Welcome to Connect. I'm guessing your question about the amount of gabapentin you can take a day is because of the pain you are having with Trigeminal Neuralgia. As patients ourselves we are only able to share experiences and what helps us. Have you talked with your doctor about how much gabapentin you can take?

Low light laser has helped me hugely. Using THOR machine. Now new crown placed has flared me up. So far no meds here. My case is incredibly complex. I just wish I had someone to talk too to sort things out. Right now I'm into alternate treatment. I've heard acupuncture is good. But low light laser has been amazing.

Thank you for you reply and for the information. I’ve read through the link and have found other sources. Some say 3600 is max others 1800 max. I’ve been on gabapentin for 4 days and have read that gabapentin takes 1 to 2 weeks to be effective. I’ll be calling my doctor today because I don’t seem to be getting much relief. It’s very eary to call your doctor. Your likely not at a dose that is thereputic for you yet. Why not give it a fighting chance to help you before calling the doctor. 3,600 mg is the recommended maximum dose, not the absolute maximum dose. Some people take more than the 3,600 mg., Gabapentins dose is somewhat side effect driven.
Hopefully it will start to help you but if it doesn’t don’t hesitate to ask for a dosage increase. I knew someone who took 7,000 mg a day without any problems.

Thank you for your reply. I was taking 3,900 with no relief. I must be a sissy I went to the doctors Saturday morning and was prescribed carbamazepine 200mg. One tablet and I was able to eat and drink with very little pain. However I haven’t been able to get a hold of my primary doctor to find out if there are any side effects with otc vitamins.

I take 3600 mg a day in three divided doses. I am a 72 year old woman and weigh 116 lbs. I take it for post herpetic neuralgia. It helps a lot.
