I'm having non stop cramping 3 weeks out from a hysterectomy. My surgeon thinks it could be a cyst and wants to do a CT Scan. Any advice?

Hi @amyoonlee Welcome to Mayo Connect.

Some pain and cramping isn’t unusual after a hysterectomy and can last for a couple weeks, But it shouldn’t be not-stop. That has to be really miserable. Why does our plumbing have to be so complicated!?!

There are some potential complications after removing the uterus such minor prolapse of the vagina or bladder. That can cause cramping. Scar tissue from the surgery (adhesions) could cause cramping. A cyst… Any of these would warrant a trip to see your doctor.

If I were you, I’d take my surgeon’s advice and go in for a CT scan. Don’t suffer any longer than you need to. Is there a reason you’re dragging your heels in having this checked out?

I am confused. CTs are generally used for hard tissue issues - like bones. I am surprised that your surgeon is not asking for a MRI. I would do the CT as he may have reasons a non medical person (like me) is not aware of, but make sure you get a copy of the report and a copy of the CD from medical records after the fact. You may need to get a second opinion and the CT should not need to be repeated. Please post on how things work out!
BTW I had complications with my hysterectomy and bi-lateral oophorectomy. Turns out I had a hematoma (ie large blood mass) the size of a grapefruit. There was a leak from one of the arteries cut to remove the uterus. (I had endometriosis - so everything was stuck together - not as it should be. The surgeon was working with a total mess...)
There was an scan taken (CT or MRI, I do not recall). Having that documentation would have been very helpful as I ended up in the ER with a fever within a couple of days of discharge...

CT scans also diagnose appendicitis for example. Better not wait too long to have the CT done.

I have had pain on my right side forever. I was told basically that I was feeling ovulation. It would get sore every other month for a couple days and go away. It started at around 15 years old, when I started my period, the pain started, like I said every other month, it became an ordinary part of feeling the pain my period was about to start. So I dealt with it, I thought it was normal. I have had 2 kids, no problems. I went into menopause 3 years ago. 5 months ago, I started bleeding, like a period. Went to see Gyno, after tests, he found a large cyst in my left ovary and lots of uterine fibroids. Even the Dr commented that he thought it was weird that my right ovary had pain and my left one with the growth had no pain. I had a hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes. There was no cancer, and everything went well. During and after the healing time, I still had the same pain on my right side. I told the Dr and they did a CT scan of ky pelvis and abdomen and found nothing that could cause me the pain I’m in. The pain has progressed to constant. There were a few things they noted like my spleen was enlarged and fatty liver. But nothing in the area of my complaint. It’s been a month and a half since surgery and the pain is the same pain I had prior to surgery. Obviously everything wrong within my uterus and ovaries wasn’t even the pain culprit to begin with. I am now noticing a new pain that is up under my rib cage on the right side, it feels as if something is jammed between my ribs. I also still have the pain on ny right side around where my ovary was. I have a gallbladder ultrasound coming up in 10 days and then I’m seeing a general surgeon in January to schedule a colonoscopy. I feel like the outcome to these things has nothing to do witj the “old original” pain, but perhaps the rib pain is my gallbladder, which is something completely new. I just wish someone had ideas about the right side pain. It’s not my appendix. It almost feels like bad period cramps, but I literally have no parts left. My uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes are all removed. My surgery was done robotically, if anyone needs to know that detail. Anyone have any ideas on what could be going on? Why I’ve had a pain there since I started having periods, it obviously isn’t normal but I really learned to accept it that way. I’m tired of living in pain.

So, I have started with cramps but I had a full hysterectomy (due to endometriosis) in 2016 and I also have no ovaries.(due to cysts and ruptures) It literally feels like endometriosis cramping but last time I talked to the doctor he said scar tissue(but did no tests) I do have a slightly prolapsed bladder but this pain doesn't feel like it at all, but who knows. I see a new family doctor this Tuesday should I bring it up to her and if so what questions should I ask. Maybe I'm missing something. I've searched but everything I'm finding is with someone who has their ovaries still. Any thoughts or advice???

Should I worry having anxiety wondering. My uterus was was attach to my bladder.

I had a hysterectomy because I Couldn't stop bleeding cramping was horrible always having problems so I had a hysterectomy. But know I am cramping like period cramps.

I’m an older female and had a total hysterectomy in 2005. I have blood in my urine daily and really bad bloating and cramping, especially at night. My right side worse than the left side. I also have an artery that had a vein grow into it which happens to be low on my right side. So far nothing has shown up on ultra sounds but the artery and vein.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
