Not being able to see an actual gastro doc at Mayo

Posted by gastrogirl @gastrogirl, Oct 29, 2021

I wrote before but I had an appointment with one of my other docs at mayo yesterday. Extremely concerned about my condition and asking why I am not yet on a feeding tube for nutrition. Told me to call and ask to get an appointment with an actual doc there and not just the NP. I been told this twice. They say there is nothing they can do, it is up to the gastro dept. My hepatologist even wrote them herself. had zero luck. So again, at their suggestion, I called and explained and again was told it is not possible to get an appointment with one of the doctors and I have to keep seeing the NP, who seems a bit over her head and is not listening to my other actual docs there. In the meantime I am eating less than 300 cals a day for months. Looks like I have to leave Mayo and find someone else. I was in hopes they all worked together as a team and one doc would get with the others and collaborate on how to treat my condition. This has not been the case. Not one of the docs I see even knows what the other is saying or doing. Is this normal? I am so disappointed.

They refuse to let me see anyone else. Told me I am stuck with the NP they gave me and they are unable to schedule me to see anyone else.

Tell them no ,.. you need to see a real Gastro Dr. or talk to patient advocate at Mayo Clinic or what other suggested . Ask if you can see Dr. Koop MD Gastro In Jacksonville.

I can try again. I have argued with them twice. They told me it is not possible to see a gastro doc once you have been assigned to an NP. The NP is the only person you are allowed to see. But I can call again. They even took my request to their supervisor, who was supposed to call me back a week ago. Nothing.
I appreciate your comment and support! TY so much!

Same here at Mayo in Eau Claire, WI. IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE A GASTRO DR. They only do the surgical procedures and one sees the nurse practitioner first AND AFTER. So frustrating but lucrative for the clinic.

I used to live in Blair, I still doctored in Rochester I never messed around with GI in Eau Claire or La Crosse. After what my mother went through I just drove the 2 hours to Rochester to see a GI specialist. I see the head
Of the dept there. I have since moved to Rochester since my bf and sister live there

@gastrogirl, you're right that this is not the normal Mayo experience. I recommend that you talk to someone at the Office of Patient Experience. A Patient Experience mediator can address concerns about your care experience at Mayo Clinic. You can fill out the online feedback form or contact them by email or phone. Here's the information:
Office of Patient Experience
https://www.mayoclinic.org/about-mayo-clinic/patient-experience
Phone: 844-544-0036 (toll free)
Email: opx@mayo.edu

I hope you get some resolution and team care.

I emailed my concerns to the OPX and now they have taken it over and are voicing them to higher ups. I am nervous that I really started something now and my docs there will know and get upset.

The staff at OPX are compassionate and do their job well. It may be a situation that has nothing to do with you specifically and it may be a simple case of miscommunication. Remember the game broken telephone? You took a brave step. This will not affect the quality of your care. If you feel it does, let OPX know.

I'm not sure what's going on at Mayo. I had Linx surgery at Mayo in Phoenix in 2014. Several years later I had issues and had a scope and barium tests done and barely over 3 years later need another endoscope and am told I'm no longer a patient since it's been over 3 years and they are no longer taking new patients! I told them Mayo did all my surgeries and after care now what? Was told to check with my primary care doctor to find a new doctor! My primary care is also Mayo!! Also followed up with patient care at Mayo and told sorry....

Yeah, it seems patient experience is not what it used to be. Every time I did talk to the gastro NP she was like she never met me before. Can you portal message your primary care doc there and tell her this? I had docs put in test for me that I had to go under for and woke up and when going to the doc for results, found out they missed the test and the doc did not know why it was not done. Nobody there seems to know what the other person is doing and scheduling seems a mess too. The doc makes a note and tells you to do it, then you call to do so and are told not and never hear back. I am over it. I am only going to patient services to keep someone else from having the same experience as me.

Yes sorry to say had been going to Mayo for years and just not the same well oiled machine it used to be, guess they will blame on Covid! I guess it's time to find new doctors!!

Everyone else I talk to has only seen a doctor there. I thought I was the only one so TY for the input. My confusion comes from my Hepatologist, she is the actual doctor, the nutritionist and the therapist, who the NP handed me over to for medicine, all say I need to see the doctor because of my condition worsening rapidly and because meds are not the way to go with me. So now I sit in limbo. The NP will only do meds. Seems I have to leave. TY for sharing that with me.

@gastrogirl
If you don't get a response by trying what Colleen suggest… then..
Try getting your Hepatologist, the nutritionist and / or the therapist to call and get you an appointment with a gastro doctor. Explain to them you have tried, but getting nowhere.
