I am 2 weeks and 2 days post op from my TKR. About a week ago the most intense burning started on the inside of my operated leg. It is brutal. Nothing at all can touch it or I about go through the roof. Even the air from my ceiling fan burns. It is not red, or blotchy. If you look at it, you would never think something is wrong. My doctor just says it's nerves. Pain pills bring no relief. The only way I can sleep at all is to lay a wet wash cloth over the area but I don't know if the incision should always be wet. I am about to lose my mind. The pain is a 10 without the washcloth over it.

Good evening Debbie. Welcome to Connect. I see this is your first post. I just read your post as I was settling in for the night and I had to reply right away. Didn't want to wait until tomorrow. I am now 7 weeks post-op from my TKR on my right knee. I certainly had nothing so frightening as what you describe. Please let me ask. Are you using ice packs several times a day for at least 20 minutes? I agree with your doctor that it is the nerves that were disturbed by the surgery. However, while they are healing, and remember that it takes longer for nerves to heal and regenerate than it does for other parts of the knee....cartilage, muscle, and skin the best solution is ice and elevate, several times a day and even in the middle of the night if necessary. Along with the ice, you do need to elevate your knee so that it is above your heart. I purchased a wedge on Amazon and I place my leg on the uphill side of the wedge.
You do need to make sure that the ice pack rests on a piece of fabric so that it isn't too cold at first. I actually purchased two ice knee wraps from Vive Health (also on Amazon) so that there would be one in the freezer ready to go at all times. These have two gel packs on the backside so that you are surrounding the entire knee area with ice.
And you are right...pain meds don't quite do what ice and elevation can do. Please give it a try and let me know how it works. I am so sorry that you are having to cope with such discomfort.
May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris
I had a total knee replacement done 5 months ago and just recently I've started having a burning feeling on the outside of my knee almost like a pulled muscle feeling.my knee is still tight and I've done 17 weeks of pt.i can't bend my knee 120,I can't climb across my bed and also still need to hold on to something when I sit on the potty.i go back to my Dr in December I'm sure he will have to do a mua malapation how ever you spell it.hes been doing x-rays every time I go and says everything looks good but he needs to do a scan to show tendons, muscles because the tightness is under my knee cap.

I am also about 3 1/2 months from tkr and also have burning and swelling. I use ice and a hand massage gun that help a bit along with mobic. Hope it lets up soon. Any other help?

It is a muscle relaxer. I have started using cbd cream on my knee and a battery massage machine plus icing it every three hours for 2.0 minutes and that seems to help a bit.
I too had mua at 6 weeks dr was able to bed my leg and straighten all the way …. Unfortunately my leg got swollen I was not able to maintain any of the range of motion from the mua….now I am 6 months out still feel tight at times ….but much better than 3 months ago ….. I started water therapy and mfr massage therapy thank god I have this team behind me now….. with there help my straight leg is 4 my bend is 75 ….. after mfr I go to water therapy in the pool I can get bend to 85 unassisted and assisted 95 …. This reminds me I can get there just have to keep on pushing it I do believe some day it’s just going to break through and I will have full range again ….. I would suggest to you if you have not done mfr massage they have a list on this sight where you can find one in your area …. This has been a life safer for me and many others that have had issue’s after tkr… hope this helps
It is now 10 weeks since I had my right Knee replacements and in the past three weeks my knee feels like it is burning not like on fire just a burn sensation. My surgeons nurse said it is due to the nerves reconnecting but to watch that it is not a constant burn I guess like all day and night the night is the worse till I fall asleep during the day it does it after I have been sitting a period of time at my desk anyone else have this.
Hi there , I am 4 weeks past a knee surgery. I had a TKR a year ago and they had to reopen the same knee and resurface the knee cap. This time around I have burning in the knee, sharp pains shooting down the side of it. I just went to a gp and he said I have about 20% range of motion. This is bad!!! My knee cap is seemingly floating around in there and moves quite easily and the pain!! It pops and grinds with any movement. It was not like this the first time around. He called the surgeon and he just said push to do the physio and wasn’t too concerned. Any advice would be great. Thank you 😊
yes! works great!
