Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

Good Morning, have you made your decision on which drug. I would be interested in how you are doing. I am on Tymlos. I went four months and had to stop for a month because of side effects. But have heard from alot that had none. Everyone is different. But I am back on only starting slowly and increasing clicks every week or two. Hope to be back to full dosage if I can but if not will settle for half dosage. If there are any questions I can help you with, I will be glad to try from my experience. Good luck and stay safe and well. KLH

I have serious afib episodes infrequently but they land me in the hospital with very high pulse rate. I only get these at night. Tymlos in the evening triggered an ICU visit. Since I have been taking it in the morning, no heart issues but it can sometimes ruin part of my day! Just did 4. We'll see how the day goes! You are smart to ramp up slowly. It really does help. I take tylenol an hour before with food.

Hi, Forgot to ask how is your cold? I hope by now it has gone away and you feel better. Let me know how you are feeling. We are still dusty and no rain. The pickups go down the road so fast and the dust goes up and I can not see across to the other side. So have not been going out to do much yard work unless the (hired) hand has to go out and help the farmer with something that will only take a few minutes as I come back in the house 90 minutes later. Well, that is the farm for you. KLH

@bkour Yes, there is a good reason for injecting into the stomach/abdominal area rather than the thigh. The injections are meant to be subcutaneous—just under the skin layers and not into muscle. For most of us, the abdomen is perfect because the skin and fat are loose enough to be pinched up, thus making a perfect injection site. Yes, you can use the thigh as long as the skin can easily be pinched up. The medication should NOT go into the muscle! And, also, you want a wider area to choose an injection site. The thigh really isn’t suitable.
Are you having concerns about injecting into your abdomen?

Not meaning to jump into the middle of a thread but since you commented about thighs... I'm doing Forteo 7 days a week and Gamunex one day a week. All into my stomach area. (Gamunex uses 4 needles to infuse.) I have goose eggs across my stomach when I finish infusing. I was thinking about switching Forteo to my thighs. I don't carry much fat. Any thoughts?

Hi @lkel Well, i did a bunch more research about Forteo. You can give it in the thigh, if you have enough fatty tissue or underlying skin tissues. I is recommended that it be given on the side of the thigh where there is more fatty tissue. I would include the Mayo site for Forteo, but unfortunately, it doesn’t have a picture of the recommended injection sites.

The reason i was specific about injecting into the abdomen is because the medicine should not go into muscle tissue. (Oh, that question was asked in another osteoporosis discussion. Sorry!)

Thank you for the video and the advice. It's very informative. I have pretty well no fat on my thighs (at least the part I can see and reach). When I pinch some skin it looks like there's nothing there. My stomach area does far better. So far I've been going up and down the outside each side of my stomach area with Forteo. As I posted earlier, I reserve the central part of the stomach area for the infusions. The 4 needles have to be at least 2 inches apart and of course avoiding the navel area. I'm able to get 3 areas horizontally which means I repeat areas every 21 days (there is lots of swelling in the infusion area - still tender 2 weeks later).

The goose eggs are supposed to be a normal side effect. I infuse 70ml each time, about a 3rd of a cup. Also have to drink lots of water which seems to be attracted to that area so it swells up a lot.

Good Morning, I got the ok from my PA to try again. So I am doing 2 clicks at night. Last night started my second week. So far so good. Only I am fatigued till about 1300, so did not get much done that I should. Next week I will 3 clicks and see how that goes. Thanks for the information. That is a good idea to help someone. I applied to Radius Assist and was approved for 18 free months. It is supposed to start in the next month or so. I hope I can go for the next 20 months. So what are you doing now to build your bones? Let me know your progress. Keep healthy and safe. KLH

I am on Forteo. I started 3 weeks ago. My bone density scans were good but I have had many broken bones (including a vertebrae). The diagnosis was based on that fracture history.

I've been on Forteo for a month. I have not really had much in side effects. I would get a rash about the size of a quarter at the injection site for several hours injecting but that is getting slightly smaller now. I didn't have any other side effects....but, the last few days the injection site "feels" a bit irritated for a couple hours after injecting. I'm not sure if I can really feel it or my imagination or perhaps I just have to get used to the injections (I have had so many, many injections during my life that I have a significant needle aversion). The needles are quite small, btw.

I did a two year regimen of Forteo. The results were a 12.8% gain in spine and 5% gain in hip. Never had side effects, but I did my injections just before bed. Figured if any dizziness happened (like some people reported) I’d already be lying down). Only occasionally would I get a bruise at the injection site. The injections themselves were virtually painless, fast and easy. The only drawback I can see is having to keep the Forteo refrigerated, but I found a perfect Thermos with cooler pack that could keep it cold for at least 36 hours. Good luck in your choice. It worked for me!
