Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

So Forteo is more expensive than Tymlos? I have to call the endocrinologist with my decision on which med to go with so that they can start contacting my insurance so I am not sure of cost yet. Maybe I should have them contact both so that I can compare. Thank you for the reply!

Just spoke to a friend. Her husband is on insulin and takes refrigerated meds wherever he goes so it doesnt seem to be as much of a problem once you get used to it, I think.

I have been on Tymlos for 4 months and it's been comfortable so far - the injections are something you get used to, and I have been fortunate to have no side effects. However, I'm planning to go on an international trip in January and I'm worried about traveling with Tymlos. I will need to start a new pen before I return home, but won't be able to keep it refrigerated during the 10 days before I start using it. I'm also concerned about getting through airport security with the medication and needles, and I don't want it to go through the Xray machine. What information does my doctor's note need to include? Has anyone else got experience with tips on how to successfully navigate this? Thanks in advance.

What effects would airport security have on the Tymlos pen? I am also traveling and had not thought of that.

I used Forteo and refrigeration was required. I thought a benefit of Tymlos was that being kept cold was not required?? You should double-check this.

I had my Forteo (which had to be kept refrigerator cold) in a special thermos in my carry-on. The only thing that ever happened, and not every trip, was that Security would ask me to open the thermos and show them what I had. They are very accustomed to seeing medication “pens” and needles (for insulin, epipen,etc.).

Sorry I meant x-ray. My kid has type 1 diabetes and we are used to avoiding x-ray by having a body pat down for her pump, CGM and supplies. Does an x-ray affect Tymlos?

Hello, I'm brand new to this group. I was diagnosed yesterday with severe osteoporosis in my lower back AND R.A. I'm a dental hygienist and went to my MD when my right hand started to hurt. I was referred to a rheumatologist for a blood marker for RA and she discovered my osteoporosis on my last several dexa scans that were not read correctly and the diagnosis was missed!! So she suggested Tymlos. She said that my insurance does not cover it. My question is, how do I get Tymols? I have read online that the manufacturer sometimes gives a discount... how does one qualify? She said that Reclast would be my second choice. My R.A, is slight, and right now, is the least of my worries

I am using Reclast for now because it is working. When it stops working, I intend to start Tymlos. My lumbar spine had a bone density of -4.5 2 and a half years ago. I can't take oral bisphosphates so 4 months later, I had an infusion of Reclast. A year after my infusion, I improved my femoral neck which is now at ostepenia and my hips improved. My lumbar spine improved to -4.2. I am due for another bone density test in a month. I am anxious to see what it is at. This past year, I have worked out at a gym an hour a day rowing, walking and weight lifting. I added Vitamin K2 to my vitamins. I will update this next month to let you know if it is working!

I have read in some studies that using Reclast before Tymlos makes the Tymlos less effective. Reclast suppresses bone turnover so it is possible that Tymlos then grows bone starting with a base line of lower quality bone. At least that is the idea. The stupid thing is that insurance companies require you to fail another drug or have a fracture before getting approval for Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity. For Tymlos, there is a Radius Assist program that you can access by calling Tymlos Together. The form is on the Radius site but Tymlos Together reps can guide you. Your income needs to be below a certain limit to get help.

Thank you! I am anxious to see if the Reclast will continue to work. I haven't seen many reviews yet on Evenity. I was emailing with one woman that was on Evenity. It didn't work well for her.

@windyshores Hi from the tortoise. Am I reading the above text correctly? You have now switched to Reclast? If so when did you do that? I sent a private message to you a week ago but you did not reply. I was beginning to worry. I did 8 for a week come the second week I start pressure on my chest for only 8-9 minutes in duration. Monday my neck started getting worse. I could not move it right or left. Luckily I had an ortho appt. on Tues. The spaces are getting narrow between c3-4, 4-5, and 5-6. They going to do a cat scan. My head only wants to look down for relief. I have been up the last two nights and could not sleep. Please let me know how you are doing. The hare is worried. Also asked about K3 and boron added to your diet. Hope you are safe and well. KLH
