Three different doctors said I’m going to die soon if I don’t lose weight. All Recommended bariatric surgery. I’m 69 years old and afraid to do it. So I thought I’d try to eat healthier first
Hi Diane @diane69 , eating healthier certainly won't hurt! This would be the first step when considering bariatric surgery anyway! To learn more about the various options for medical and surgical weight loss, consider checking out the Weight Management connect page. Across the tabs you can select anything from lifestyle all the way through surgery and watch short informational videos that may help you better understand your options. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/weight-management-1/
If you do not eat meat (protein), then 1,000 mg of Vitamin 12 is recommended. Check with your primary care physician before taking any additions to your diet.
Thanks, @bostonresident (I wish I was still a Boston resident)
I do plenty of meat so I doubt this is a problem for me. I am going to assume it is not.

I’m new here and need to figure out food to
eat with autoimmune PBC. I’m not a big veggie eater and looks like I need LOW fat, salt and sugar. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Hi Gema, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You might like to connect with other members living with autoimmune Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) in this discussion, including @rosemarya. She may also have some diet tips.
Hello,
I am 72 and diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and trigeminal neuralgia but today an ultrasound showed I have heterogeneous liver parenchyma and a liver cyst and a kidney cyst and polips in my gold bladder
My PCP sent me the report but only mentioned the liver cyst to be checked in three months.
I looked it up and it seems I have a fatty liver .
I weigh 97 Lbs! And have been fighting weight loss and loss of appetite for several years. I was also told my iron is elevated
Anyone comment on this please? I am puzzled to say the least

@gema98, Welcome to Connect. I am happy that Colleen tagged me to this discussion about meals. When I was first diagnosed with liver disease, my doctor's advice was to maintain a healthy life style with healthy diet and physical activity. He encouraged me to do this by making some lifestyle changes
There was not a specific 'diet' or recipe file. My life changes included less red meat and changes in food preparation. I made small changes and followed his suggestion of - moderation.
Heart Healthy is the term for my dietary choices.
Gema, What has your doctor told you? Has he told you to avoid alcohol, over-the-counter meds and supplements?

This caught my eye "... have been fighting weight loss and loss of appetite for several years. I was also told my iron is elevated," along with the comment about polyps in your gall bladder, liver cyst and "fatty liver." It seems like this combination should be looked at because a low/non-functioning gall bladder and/or liver affects the absorption of nutrients, and can depress digestion and appetite.
I think you should ask for further investigation of this by your doc - soon, not just wait & watch. Or referral to a gastroenterologist. There are other tests that can be performed to pinpoint exactly what is happening.

I haven’t been told anything which is why I’m reaching out and reading online articles! I’m very upset! Three years ago was told fatty liver I assumed because I was 60lb overweight but my whole family brothers and sister 20 years older and much heavier none of them have this. Then I was told autoimmune disease attacked my liver, no one ever mentioned diet or wt loss. My husband had cancer and while taking care of him I lost 45lbs. I just started my own diet no red meat, greasy food, salt, sugars all cut back. So I lost another 10 lb from this in past month. My GI put me on Ursodiol 5 months ago but she just quit working and referred me to hepatologist Dr who I see on 10/14. I have never smoked, drank, drugs, no out of marriage affairs. I take meds for BP, thyroid, baby aspirin, stool softener, VitD, and calcium when I remember it, IB for backache occasionaly.
Thank you so very much to all who kindly took the time to comment on my situation. I read that the radiologist report with a “ fast check up in three months “ while my PCP is very relaxed about it although she did place the order and said to book it. I have no liver enlargement which is good news but forgot to mention ( anyone ?) my abdomen is very distended which was the reason she ordered the US and has not given me any advice. She just ordered the next US but did not give me any guidance or what to do about my huge belly. And I inky weigh 97 lbs
I thought about seeing a gastroenterologist, yes, and on Monday I am having a video visit with her PA and will ask her all my questions. Changing PCP was also in my mind.
My best wishes to all of you, hope you feel as well as possible and thanks a million! It’s so good to be heard!

Get a colonoscopy now. Stay away from grease and fatty foods. Look up detoxing your liver. See another doctor. May have cancer
Go to a high fiber diet with over 50 age vitamins with omega 3 fish pills. See a different doctor asap
