Booster - have you had one and what were side effects

Posted by Laurie, Volunteer Mentor @roch, Sep 17, 2021

Lot of news about boosters, if and when should get. I do not want to get into politics, just wondering for those who have had, what are your side effects?

I received my Moderna booster at Mayo Rochester on Wed. 9/15 (6 months after my 2nd COVID vaccine). Mayo reached out to me via portal and advised me to make an appointment for booster. I assume this is based on medical information in my Mayo medical record, I have many medical conditions, but cancer in remission is most serious.

There are pros and cons of getting, but I decided the pros out weighed the cons in my situation.

I am on day 2, and experiencing sore arm, headache and tired. I had a headache and sore arm after 2nd shot, this time slightly worse. Hopefully will go away in few days. Glad I have nothing important to do today, taking Tylenol and hope headache goes away before weekend.

I am first person I know to get booster. My sister has also been notified to get her booster, and is waiting to see how I react to mine. Also, many of my friends are interested in how I react to booster.

I am interested in side effects people are having and how long they lasted, were they about same as 2nd shot or worse.

Thanks
Laurie

I'm not due for my booster until the end of November. Has anyone who has gotten the booster had an improvement with their Post Covid Syndrome?

I received my flu shot yesterday at Publix and was told to wait 4 weeks to get the Phizer booster. Is that a Mayo protocol also?

According to this article, you can get the COVID booster and flu shots at the same time.
- You can get COVID-19 vaccine booster and flu shots at the same time https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/health-equity-research/newsfeed-post/yes-you-can-get-covid-19-vaccine-booster-and-flu-shots-at-the-same-time/

Naturally, it is more convenient to make one visit. But you may also wish to consider your own history of how your body reacts to vaccines in general. Like @sueinmn, your doctor may recommend spacing out the vaccines to monitor reactions.

Like most suggestions on COVID vaccine boosters, I have heard multiple answers about timing of flu shot.

CDC FAQ on flu vaccines states it is OK to get at same time. BUT, I think @sueinmn comment from her primary and pharmacist about separating in case you have side effects or adverse reaction is good advice. If you do decide to give at same time, I would not do in same arm.

P.S. My booster side effects of headache went away after 2 days. Sore arm took 5 days.

I had zero issues after my COVID booster. I had some lethargy after the senior flu shot. Nothing debilitating.

Booster = Better, Better, Better! My husband, daughter & I have all had our third doses. Each of us had side effects after the first and second doses, his were mild, daughter had days of headache, nausea & vomiting. I had headache, body aches, fatigue, and ultimately an extreme system-wide inflammatory response that required a course of steroids to resolve (2 weeks worked.)
This time - sore arms, a slight body aches for 48 hours - that's it!
I saw one of my docs today, and she said that is what her patients, even those with fairly severe reactions before, are reporting.

So if you are among those recommended for a booster or third dose, I would say you shouldn't hesitate.

This might sound like a silly question, but I've gotten mixed answers....I had the vaccine complete in February. I tested positive for Covid in August and am still recovering. Is the booster something I even need to get at this time? Or do the antibodies I have cover it?

Hi Sara. @roch asked a similar question in this discussion about whether to get the booster or not and when. I encourage you to read through the past comments. The answer that is right for you may be different than for someone else depending on any underlying conditions and your antibody levels. What has your doctor recommended for you?
