HABIT Partners with Neuroglee

Sep 14, 2021 | Dr. Melanie Chandler, HABIT FL Director | @drmelaniechandler | Comments (21)

In HABIT we've kept our Memory Support System (aka the MSS, aka the planner, aka the calendar) in paper form since the beginning. Back then there wasn't much else to choose from, but we've kept the MSS in paper format for a number of reasons that we've highlighted before. However, technology has different potential benefits, such as the ability to set reminders, being more user friendly for some patients with tremor or other handwriting issues, and our patients (and some of you in the comments section of that recent blog post) have expressed a desire for an electronic tool.

Recently, we've begun partnering with Neuroglee Therapeutics to develop an electronic application of the MSS based on our experiences in HABIT. The Neuroglee tool will also incorporate other aspects of the HABIT program, such as wellness action plans related to nutrition, cognitive exercise, and physical exercise. The product isn't here yet but we are closely collaborating with them as the product is developed. Neuroglee's hope is for completion by the end of the year.  I want to share with you some press releases about the project so far:

Don't worry - our paper version of the MSS isn't going anywhere.  This collaboration and digitization will hopefully offer our patients more options in the future.

What do you think?  If you had the choice of a paper or digital planner system, what would you choose?  Why?

I like the idea of a digital version that automatically syncs between my husband and myself. I can’t wait to be able to attend HABIT!

I'm interested in an electronic version of HABIT. Right now I use Google Assistant with Keep, Calendar, Timer, Reminders, etc. It works pretty well, but I'd like to use something that's been specifically made for people with cognitive impairment. And, I'd like to have a Zoom class or at least a video to help me learn how to use it. I'm still pretty good at learning how to use technology, but it's beginning to get tiring to do it all on my own.

No. I'm interested in the HABIT program, but I would never commit to using a paper system. I've tried things like bullet journals and day timer systems. I hate hauling paper systems around. I find it much easier to store things online. I've been keeping track of a cell phone since '97. I have family in Minnesota and I'd consider going to Rochester for training, but I'd prefer something like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. I think it's great that you're working on a computer version.

I would choose paper right now. The computer application sounds daunting for a low tech person like me.

We attended the Habit program several years ago in Florida. My wife has now been DX with Alzheimer’s disease, mostly forgetting within 5 minutes of what was just discussed. She is still active with the paper calendar while I use the technology calendars . We also share a whiteboard calendar for the week, where we use it to combine our notes and meetings. Not many meetings with Covid though. Yet at the same time, she still has a blog documenting her journey with dementia. I would be happy to be a Beta tester for the proposed software.

What a lovely offer, Klaken.
As you and your wife navigate the ever-changing landscape of Alzheimer's, I invite to join others in the Caregivers: Dementia group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/caregivers-dementia/
