I have questions about Pernicious Anemia + IBS + FODMAP
I was diagnosed several years ago with pernicious anemia (PA) a condition that originates in the gut, and blocks the absorption of B12 from food sources. Lifelong supplements of B12 are required either through B12 shots or megadoses of sublingual B12 tablets. Additionally, another symptom of PA is the absence of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, making it harder to break down, digest, and eliminate food efficiently. This can result in lots of digestive discomfort. To top it off, recently diagnosed with IBS! Who hasn’t been?!? Anyway, my desire in starting this discussion has to do with diet. I’m wondering if anyone has found a FODMAP diet helpful with IBS or any other approaches? Help?!?!

I had severe PA when they finally found mine. Have they checked you for Gastritis or Gastroparesis? I ask because they treated me for IBS at first and FODMAP did not work at all for me. Later they found I had both the above instead. Only because there were a lot of things on FODMAP that I could not digest and break down. When they thought I had only IBS I was told to do FODMAP and eliminate one food at a time and keep a good diary. A great nutritionist is key to helping make a diet just for you! I have heard wonderful outcomes from that diet! Best of luck.
Hello @jkay2418 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Yes! Many of us have found the FODMAP eating plan to be quite helpful for all sorts of problems. It is very interesting to me that it is also useful for pernicious anemia.
I started a discussion on the FODMAP eating plan when I began it. Here is a link to that discussion, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/fodmap-eating-plan/
If you read these posts you will see how the eating plan has helped with many digestive disorders and especially with IBS.
Have you begun the FODMAP eating plan already or are you just considering it?

Here is a video made by a certified dietician at Mayo about the FODMAP eating plan.
Cool! Thanks. I see my dietician at Mayo in FL. She is awesome!!!
Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate hearing from you snd especially hearing that you have found the FODMAP approach helpful. I have found it helps a lot and I’m definitely feeling better. It takes some adjusting, but so worth it! Again, thank you for taking the time to respond to my plea for help!!! All best, Jamie
Thanks so much for responding and providing the link. I will definitely check it out! I have begun the FODMAP Zolan and I am amazed at the difference it makes! Again, many thanks!!!
Jamie
Great! Hope this is useful!!!
Jamie
Wonderful!! Many thanks!
Hi @jkay2418
I hope that your appointment with the dietician goes well. I'm not familiar with FODMAP Zolan. I'll have to look that up. It must be a form of the original FODMAP.
I'd love to hear how you are doing. Will you keep in touch with updates?
Will definitely keep in touch on progress, but I’m not the one with the dietician appointment. That person is higher up on the thread: @gastrogirl
