Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

I have had this occur as well. I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy and EGD in 2 weeks but I can tell you I don't have a GI bleed. I got the second shot of the vaccine on 7/31 and my HGB was 14. 2 weeks later it ws 12 and it is now 10. No other explanation. My doc also says this isn't reported but there sure seem to be a lot of us mentioning it.

I am new here but have had this same issue following the 2nd dose of Pfizer. I have had Mulitple Myeloma and have been in remission for 3.5 years but still have blood drawn and cancer markers drawn...otherwise I would not have known of this issue. My hgb was 14 on 7/31 which is the same day I got the 2nd vaccine shot. On 8/26 I had a physician appt so they drew a ton of labs in preparation and my hgb was 12. Didn't really pay any attention to it as it's not that bad. Also on 8/26 I started on Melaxicam which is a strong ibuprofen, for lack of another term. On 9/8 my labs were drawn for my oncologist: HGB: 10.8. HCT: 31.9. Iron 20; Iron Sat 8
They stopped the Melaxicam thinking it could be a GI bleed. They also scheduled me for an EGD and colonoscopy. I know I don't have a bleed and I didn't have any GI upset with the Melaxicam. I know we have to check those just to make sure they aren't the cause but I really feel it is the vaccine and it caused a fast drop. I was started on Iron. I will have labs drawn again next Friday on 9/24/21. I'm assuming my Fe will be up since I'm on Iron. I did not report it to VAERS.

@dstinchcomb, welcome. You may wish to join the multiple myeloma discussions on Mayo Clinic Connect in the Blood Cancers & Disorders group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/blood-cancers-disorders/

I hope everyone will report their experiences with low iron and hemoglobin to VAERS so that research can be done into this side effect.

Thank you and I will. CDC and VAERS just seem so ridiculous these days but I know it's still good to do. Will do so. Sounds like there may be quite a few of us.

For those of you who have had this issue and haven't mentioned it, what was your recovery time? Was it "only" a short time and your FE and HGB went back to normal and did you have any treatment (I noticed a couple received blood). Thank you for your feedback. So glad to find I'm not crazy as the medical community is not taking this side effect seriously.

I’m here because I also found out I have low iron after Pfizer vaccine. I had a small allergic reaction day of the first shot. Two days later I started experiencing shortness of breath and couldn’t even do household chores or walk my dog. They thought it was asthma and treated it as such but nothing improved. Then the fatigue set in. I couldn’t get a doctor to take me seriously for 2 months. I started iron supplements on my own and started to see some improvement in the shortness of breath. Finally found a doc willing to investigate. They ran blood work and iron is low. I initially reported reaction to VAERS before knowing what was wrong. I wanted to update but VAERS isn’t responding with a key so I can document. So not surprised there are no documented cases in VAERS. They don’t seem to want people to report.

Not a short time. I am almost 6 months into recovery. Very slow process. Treatment is -Iron ferrous gluconate 27mg x3 a day, vitamin D , C and super B , going for second follow up in two weeks. Hemoglobin was much better after three months , iron was still low , I was still anemic , red blood counts still out of limits , looking forward to next review. It is unclear if this will become chronic or be one and done !!!!

Yes. My husband has never had any history of anemia or low iron. He received the Pfizer vaccine in March. He began feeling more tired over the next two months. He saw his physician and she suspected some type of internal bleeding based on the blood test, He had an upper and lower endoscopy. No internal bleeding was found. They are going to try the camera endoscopy next week. We don't think this is going to reveal anything. His iron, ferritin and red blood cell count is extremely low. The only change in has been receiving the vaccine.

The day after I got my second dose of Pfizer I starting getting daily dizzy spells for a month and super fatigued. Recently I had black stools and went to doctor. She called today to tell me I needed a scope done. I have severe anemia and she thinks I have been bleeding for awhile. Makes me wonder if the vaccine caused it. I’ve never had problems like this before.
