Wigs: Prepping for hair loss due to chemo: Where to start?
Hey all, just prepping for the loss of my hair. I’d like to get a couple wigs but don’t know where to start. I can’t tell online what is decent and what is not.
Thanx

I still have a schoolgirl crush on Christopher Walken. When I was going through all my chemo treatments my IV cart was called Christopher so when I’d walk daily around the hospital pushing the IV I was “Walken with Chris”. My nurses even put his pic on my IV trolley. 😂. That’s why it’s such a hoot when my hair started growing in that it looked so much like his!! Here’s a pic of my IV cart at Mayo. And also a link to one of my all time favorite Christopher Walken dances…

Bwahahahaha, I love him dancing. I read somewhere a long time ago he was a classically trained ballroom dancer. If you scroll down to here comes the hot stepper. I love how the old man start to come alive and goes wild then goes back to being an old guy in a chair.
I don’t know where bookmarks go but I tried to bookmark this to keep it.
Good news. Mine was curly but I had the same hairdo and so has most of the patients I know when it grows back, if only temporarily. Lol
Oh phooey. I thought the link would take you directly to that one. It IS the video with the old man coming to life. When you search for it again, it’s called Fat Boy Slim.
Baseball caps and brightly colored bandanas and scarves.
Years ago I had chemo for breast cancer. I lost about 2/3 of my hair. It grew back darker and wavy. As an adult I have had straight thin hair. I was wavy as a kid. More recent I had immunosuppressives. I didn’t lose my hair, but after treatment it grew more wavy again. Thicker too.
Lol, I have been bald a few times so it has taken more than once to get the coarse, wiry, white mess I have now. My husband says I am a wild thing.
Me too. do you need to have it fitted against your head or purchasing online off the shelf works?
I think you should be able to buy online unless your head is unusually large. My head is quite large and they all fit me. They have an adjuster on the underside to snug it if necessary. Be sure to order the soft cloth cap that goes underneath, or it will be scratchy. I bought a couple, but only wore them once or twice because they were hot. Luckily I owned my own business and felt comfortable wearing a head scarf or a hat.
I bought several wigs from Headcovers.com. It’s a really nice site designed for cancer patients. There is an easy guide for determining the size and cap type that’s best for you.
Like @auntieoakley mentioned, buy the soft cap to go underneath to keep it from feeling scratchy and also it helps keep a firm fit. But like others, I really didn’t wear my wigs all that often. I grew to love the ease of no hair and rocked that bad-girl vibe. LOL.
@merpreb I'm probably a bit late to the party here but my experience was similar to yours. I was prescribed a pretty heavy duty regimen of folfirinox (pancreatic cancer) and was convinced my hair would fall out. I cut my hair short but my hairdresser wasn't keen on cutting it as short as I wanted - she kept saying "not everyone loses their hair", but from all I'd read about the side effects and the type of chemo I thought no way could it stay in place.
I didn't want huge hanks of my long hair coming out in my hands and thought hair loss would be more tolerable with shorter hair. Held off on the wigs but bought several head wraps and caps.
What do you know? Other than some slight thinning, not noticeable to anyone but me and my husband, my hair stayed put! Some people suffer little to no hair loss, even on a pretty harsh form of chemo. Not sure if it's genetic or what.
