Medical marijuana for sleep disorders?

Posted by mazeppabob @mazeppabob, Oct 3, 2020

I have tried to research this topic on the internet but like everything else, it is difficult to weed truth from fiction.
Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of medical or street pot? How it might help or hinder sleep issues. Doctors are reluctant to talk about it. I am sick and tired of chasing my tail around, throwing money at. If CPAP doesn't work you get sent to a shrink and put on another antidepressant with all kinds of unpleasant side effects. CBD oil did nothing for me and the last time I smoked pot was probably 50 years ago. I will try just about anything to get one good night's sleep.

I'm on Seraquel for Mood disorder and sleep. I also dream vividly and have nitemares! I'm in Iowa and have few resources. Just your average shrink. Maria.

I started using mmj for chronic pain. I have had idiopathic hypersomnia my whole life. My mom had to drive to my house and wake me up for work everyday. Ten alarms wouldn’t do it. After a couple months on mmj for pain I noticed I was waking up on my own. On weekends I used to sleep 20+ hours. Now I pop up after 8 fully rested. Mmj has eliminated all IH symptoms for me.

@klrouse10 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

Wow, what a success. May I ask if this is a common response to mmj?

MMJ seems to reduce anxiety for myself, as an insomniac who wakes 1.5 hours after falling asleep. But, not keeping me asleep. More CBD or more THC???

Insomnia and THC I am looking for a physician to prescribe marijuana in a gummy for insomnia which I’ve had for the past 6 years since having open heart surgery. I also have COPD so can’t take many of the sleep aids

Hi Mimigirl, welcome. You'll notice that I moved your question to this existing discussion called "Medical marijuana for sleep disorders?" I think you may appreciate reading the past posts and connecting with members like @mazeppabob @lolaemma @marjou @tgs @klrouse10 and @marye2.

Mimi, Finding a physician who will prescribe medical marijuana may differ from state to state. Have you ever gone to a sleep clinic or sleep medicine specialist?

THC/CBD tincture drops under the tongue at bedtime are what I've used for insomnia after struggling with the Benzo meds. Placed under the tongue minimizes the amount going through the digestive system which bother some. The dosage is easily adjusted with the graduated dropper. In the last two months I've been using a Cpap and even though I have minimal apnea episodes it has improved my sleep on the nights I'm not fighting the mask.

Gummy’s helped for the first 3 nights. Too expensive to keep trying!

Try THC/CBN. CBN is much better for sleep. It will not work without THC but it doesn’t take much to activate CBN, which has zero “high”. I get mine from my D.O. doctor after going to her for acid reflux to get off Prilosec.
