Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

I am having exactly the same problem, although I received the astrazeneca vaccine. I have always had quite high iron, have given blood successfully for the past 10 years (but generally only once a year). I had the first AZ vaccination in January, then the next in April. I began suffering with headaches/ tiredness/ dizziness in February, but this got far worse in May/ June. I had a blood test in late June, had very low hemoglobin level and my ferritin was 2. I have been taking iron supplements since, no improvement in my blood as yet. Due to have another test next week, doing everything I can to increase my iron absorption! No idea if it is related to the vaccine or not, but I am generally very healthy, I am 31 and have no other health problems.

I received the Maderna vaccine in March. For months I was getting more and more fatigued. Sleeping all day after sleeping all night. Finally I couldn't walk 100 ft without resting. So three weeks ago I went to my physician and got a blood test. That night I was instructed to go straight to the emergency room and get a blood transfusion. I had been diagnosed with critical anemia. Whether this is tied to the vaccine or not, cannot be proven.

Hello @rebecca31 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Thank you for joining this discussion to share your experience. I am sure this has been concerning as dealing with headaches, fatigue and dizziness are difficult day-to-day.

Outside of iron supplements, have you made any changes to your diet to support you as you work to rebuild iron levels? If so, will you share?

Hello @praktis and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. What a scary scenario that slowly unfolded over, what sounds like, several months only to conclude with a blood transfusion.

Assuming you did get the infusion, can you share your post-infusion outcome?

Yes. My husband has never had any history of anemia or low iron. He received the Pfizer vaccine in March. He began feeling more tired over the next two months. He saw his physician and she suspected some type of internal bleeding based on the blood test, He had an upper and lower endoscopy. No internal bleeding was found. They are going to try the camera endoscopy next week. We don't think this is going to reveal anything. His iron, ferritin and red blood cell count is extremely low. The only change in has been receiving the vaccine.

Hello @cellis5094 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. At what point did your symptoms cause you to look into getting your bloodwork done? What were your symptoms?

I had 4 pints of blood transfused over night and within 24 hours I felt 20 years younger. I don't think it's lasting though. All the symptoms are starting again even though I am now taking iron pills now.

Couldn't walk more than 100 ft without resting. Heavy breathing. Sleeping a lot. Feeling spacey. I was fine sitting at my desk

Do not let the low iron go untreated. No telling if it’s related to Covid or the vaccine, but must be managed closely. We may be in a new place so demand attention. Might need more iron but this must be managed with your Dr.
