(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

@tdrell Ha
ha ha! Terri, you sound like a sexy vision of loveliness when retiring to bed.
Just like me, with my oxygen nose cannula and nightstand full of pills and
kleenex! I hope you don't mind me joking a bit about it. I have to
laugh....
@windwalker For your record, I work in IT (computer programmer). So I'm not a nurse nor a teacher.
@tdrell Terri,
seriously, I do not know how people can still work and deal with this stupid
disease. I guess it depends on the severity, I would probably be dead by now
if I had not gone on disability. Besides stress and catching illnesses from
co-workers; I never would have had time to find better healthcare (Mayo) or
felt comfortable taking off all of the time I have had to for testing etc. My
boss would not have stood for that amount of time
off.
@ling123 Thank
you for checking in Ling. I will make note of that.
Hello again Windwalker,
Just want to add another profession to your list. I was a Flight Attendant for 30 years working on International routes.
12 hours in a metal tube with the same air recycling in so so filters,with an airplane packed with people with different problems brought on lots respiratory illnesses throughout the years.
My immune system is very glad that I have retired !
But I was very lucky to have worked for a wonderful airline and had a really nice career.
Hugs to all, Andree
Thank you so much Katherine for ''this great information. I just read on Terri's post that you are taking a well deserved break from everything that I have read from you.
I just wast to tell you that I will take your advice and ask my Doctor to put me on a list for a
Bronchoscopy , I really want to know what is going on in there.
Yesterday, I was trying to pack a few things while getting ready to show my property for sale
and I find that I have absolutely no energy and I can feel that there is matter in my pipes that is stuck there and won't come out.
I am truly fed up with this procrastination so I will call the secretary tomorrow Monday and insists on being scheduled for this test.
Thank you an Terri for everything,
Hugs , Andree
@mariposa Andree,
Stewardess, that is interesting. I know you ARE glad not to be breathing that
circulated air anymore! Thank you for contributing to my poll. Hope you are
having a good day. Hugs - Terri M.
I've noticed many nurses & teachers posting too. I was a nurse for 45 years, in hospitals & the classroom. Count me in your stats.
They have to see your medical record first before they decide if you can be qualified also they are busy. They told me when you are out town you have to stay one weekend b/c they will do so many testing. I called Mayo in Jacksonville and they don't have any open appt. If I get there I don't have to fly just drive 4 hrs. NJH colorado I have to fly and stays in the hotel. But anyway thanks for your advised. Cila.
Hello Heather, can I get that over the counter? I think we start the meds almost the same time last year. How are you doing with your MAC? I thought I get off on the meds this year but the last CT scan I have found new nodules. My Pulmonary Dr. never did any sputum culture. I decide to see if I can see another Dr. Thanks for the help. Cila.
