(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

I did not know that about Zithromax. TB is a mycobacterium like MAc, but unlike MAC, TB can be cured. Two of our children were treated for a full year with Isoniazid due to their BCG vaccinations. They will always have positive skin tests, but have no active TB infection.
You are kind to ask. I am grateful for every day Terri. I pick one goal for each day. Losing my independence has been the hardest thing for me and for my family because MAC has been very debilitating for me. I don't like asking for help, but I am aware of my limitations. Having ten children (six are special friends from China) and almost thirteen grand babies now is a wonderful blessing. The change in my role from super mom and teacher to "this" has been especially challenging for my family. I'm real good from the neck up! 🙂
@irene5 Hi Irene. That is smart to set one goal a day. I do the same.
Some days I give myself permission to just lay low and do very little. Sometimes
that feels good when you have a very bad fatigue day. Thankfully my hubby took
over all food shopping and food prep. Also grateful that he enjoys it. You must
have tons of joy with all of those kids and grandkids. My niece and her two
young ones were just here to visit me for the weekend. We went to the pool, a
boat ride w/swimming, to the beach, more pool and late movie. All of that in 2
1/2 days; in extreme heat and humidity. I am STILL recovering from all of
that. I made myself do these things because I rarely see
them. There are so many wonderful people on this
thread; I wish we could all get together in person as a support group. It would
be nice to actually see and visit with each other. I know we can't, but a lovely
thought. Hang in there Irene and enjoy the love all around you. -Terri

Yes, it would be awesome to meet everyone! In the meantime this is a wonderful "connection!" Thank you Terri!
Hello ladies. Just wanted to jump in and report that I had a nodule show up in a scan last Nov. that had not been there before. X-ray three weeks ago showed it had diminished to barely visible. We must celebrate our small successes!
Yay!
hI cINDY, i WAS AZITHROMYACIN, (SAME STUFF) for a year and half and cannot tolerate anymore. Now just using nebulizer and exercise, but I cough up blood also, sometimes a lot. it is so so scary! But, it always seems to stop, so at least we have that. i am kind of afraid to travel because of it. xo
@unicorn .. Christa I've lost the thread of the posts .. where does Dr. O'Donnel practice .. for my File Cabinet! Hugs! Katherine
I know. Thanks for sharing.
Cindy
@128128terry11t thank you Terry .. it is SO good to have personal referrals on our Forum for doctors we can trust! We have all seen the result for our members of doctors who didn't have a CLUE about our shared diseases of MAC and Bronchiectasis! Going right to my trusty File Cabinet! Hugs! Katherine
