Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

My husband gives blood regularly. He received the Pfizer vaccine and his blood which has never been low in iron was low in iron. I fed him an iron rich diet the week prior to him giving blood. I'm hoping it's not tied to the vaccine. They actually wouldn't take his blood because the iron content was so low.

I had the same experience. my iron levels for the last two donation attempts was in the low 12s. It needs to be 12.5 to be able to donate. I was pretty baffled because i donate every 8-9 weeks and have never seen this before. And the only major change in my health was the Pfizer vaccine.

Iron or hemoglobin? Value sounds like hemoglobin as that is part of the screening , normal I believe is 16 to 18 , I suggest you have your Iron checked and start counter measures before you become anemic

One more question what was the time from vaccine to rejected attempt to donate blood please , this will be very helpful for my time line as well

@maitri, @stellm & @trieste -
This is an interesting issue - I have a few questions for each of you, as we all look for answers about these new vaccines.

As I said in earlier posts, I have looked at both VAERS (the place to report reactions) and everything I could find through research, and this is a completely unreported issue to date. Additionally, my daughter a Covid health/triage nurse for a large health system has not heard of it either.

- Did you report the reaction where you received the vaccine or to your doc, so it could be recorded in VAERS?
- Were your low blood counts found as the result of your feeling ill after the vaccine, or during routine blood tests during other health care?
- Have the counts been repeated to see if they have improved?
- What did the doc have to say?
- Are you able to see your blood test results over time, to see if this is part of the normal fluctuations we all have?
- @trieste Did you or your husband have any other symptoms?

Sorry for the long list, but it certainly is curious that we have not seen any reports since Day 1, and would love to improve our knowledge of what is going on.
Thank you!
Sue

We didn't report to vaers or the vaccination site. It didn't seem serious enough. My husband has blood drives at work so I will wait until they test his blood again to see if the iron count is still low.

I am new here. I found this link after searching for low ferritin. I felt well after the first dose of vaccine. After the second, I became extremely tired. I have had anemia on and off for years. My anemia has been much worse before but my ferritin levels have never been any where near this low before, they are a 3. Since there are several people here with the same issue, can't the monitors report this to the CDC? I had the Pfizer vaccine.

Hello I'd like to address the issue of the monitors reporting. That is not the role of Mayo Connect. We are a peer to peer support group for people with a wide variety of health issues and concerns. Our goal is to connect people so they can share their experiences with one another in hopes of helping each other. We are not medical professionals and cannot make diagnosis or offer treatment plans.

The roles of volunteer mentors and professional moderators are to help people use the group to their best advantage and make sure Connect guidelines are understood.

Members are anonymous, known only by their screen name and such information as they choose to share, so there would be no way to provide research grade data for any reporting. For this reason, if you feel that an issue like low hemoglobin or ferritin is the result of a Covid vaccine, you should report it in VAERS. All events are enumerated and those with the most serious consequences or frequency are studied further by research teams across the country. I'm on my phone so I don't have the link handy.

Exactly, Rosemary. I don't have an easy way to put bookmarks on my phone...
And I refuse to go inside to the computer until it gets dark-summer is too short!

@kaswick2- Good morning. I see your frustration and understand how very frustrating it is when it's so difficult to find answers, especially when it concerns our health. I can see it in each of your words. Results are so different for each person it would be impossible to handle all side effects from everyone who asked us to report problems.

When there is a problem that you experience first hand it is always a good idea to report it immediately to people who can help. A first-person report is always better than going through a second person as stories change and stories are passed from person to person.

I'm not quite sure who you mean as "monitors". If you mean Mentors and Moderators then we can only encourage you to report side effects to the appropriate organization. Mentors on Connect have all started by looking for help for something, "we were not born being mentors" lol. So we are first patients, peers, your next-door neighbor who you sit down with over a glass of wine or cup of coffee and just rap about what is wrong. It's a give and take, and give connection with people who know just how you feel and what you are talking about. We help people connect with others who have the same questions, problems, or experiences.

This community is based on an honor system for privacy, even if it is a public forum. To make sure that this stays this way it is up to everyone to handle problems, reports, and appointments for themselves.

Does this make sense?

You are right it is the hemoglobin levels that they screen for. My numbers are in the normal range, however it is not in the range acceptable for blood donation.
