Does anyone have ringing in the ears? At times mine is so loud I can't think I don't know of any solutions,if you do I,d appreciate hearing from you.

I wanted to go to a hearing aid person as she said she could run some tests, but I needed to get a referral from my doctor first. I doubt if he will give me one because he said just put noise on louder and you won't notice it...ha...easy for him to say. The next time I go to him tho, I will ask for a referral.

I've had tinnitus for many years, but it seems to be getting louder lately. I have autonomic and small fiber neuropathy, which could be what's causing the ringing. I'm seeing a Neuro specialist soon, and I hope to learn more about what's going on with several issues.

I've had tinnitus since I was ~17. NO Cure. I'm having internal body vibration and my tinnitus is getting louder. I do keep the CD player on all day for background.

I wear hearing aids to -NO relief from tinnitus from those. It's a nerve problem behind the inner ear.

What a lame thing for your doctor to say!

I agree. It's CYA - He doesn't know so he's passing you one to someone else who doesn't know.

I have been seeing an audiologist who tested my hearing and gave me hearing aids which I’m happy with. I told her that I have soft pleasant music in my ears much of the time. I usually her a chorus, more often men than women, and it’s high quality voices. Often there will be definite familiar beautiful songs like Amazing Grace or other hymns or sweet things like Swing low sweet chariot or patriotic songs, but never with words. Sometimes it’s just a repetition of 2 or 3 notes in the same pattern over and over. The audiologist said nothing about this except to say that this is called musical tinnitus. I think I’ll try to join your discussion group for which I haven’t formally signed up. I told my psychiatrist who said nothing about this condition or whether it’s a factor in my generalized anxiety or my MCI … I don’t know if many others hear music like this.

Heidi Ruth. I certainly hear music in my head. I have had worsening tinnitus for 30 years but the musical phrases and chorus only appeared within the pas 5 years.

I hope your music is as pleasant as mine. I decided to welcome it as nice background music piped in from my own brain. It doesn’t distract me from attention to whatever I’m doing, including going to sleep. I haven’t mentioned it to family members or friends because it seems so odd. I am tempted to compare this phenomena with the spoken voices produced by the brains of schizophrenic folks. As a matter of fact, there must be similarities in that our brains, like theirs perhaps, are involuntarily producing actual music though not actual spoken words. The brain process certainly might be similar. I wish I knew why and my brain choses the music, all familiar songs. Sometimes for days the song remains the same such as the multiple repeats of “Amazing Grace.” Sometimes I say to myself, amused, “Why THIS particular song?” … or why these particular songs, not others, come apparently to entertain me though I had not been thinking of any of these songs. I cannot change whatever song is “playing” and I cannot end it, and the songs are not songs I’ve been thinking about or wishing to hear. None have been songs I dislike. I guess I could thank my brain for that, but isn’t my brain ME?… I am the one responsible for the songs, no one else. It’s a puzzlement. A mystery .

....totally agree with you in that "why this song or why this music or why humming" ... this cannot be a new phenomenon so has it been researched by scientists or ? I suppose not enough people have it or say they have it so compared to life threatening illnesses it is down the list.... I too am wondering about any connection between it being something not to worry about as relates to hearing loss, have been told, and it's similarity with people who hear voices telling them to do things, kind of scary but so far it's "only" been music or close to chanting and I cannot figure out the words. However, along with a laundry list of other issues I have it is for me "another worry." J.

Along with music and musical phrases I also hear voices. They are a group of people talking or conversing. I can’t hear what they are saying though. Also regarding the music, I can change the tune by a mental effort. It’s hard but it can be done.
