COVID vaccines and neuropathy

Posted by cue @cue, Feb 15, 2021

I am 85 with small fiber neuropathy that is getting worse. My neurologist thought it would be a good idea for me to wait with the covid vaccine and not be first in line to see how it affected other people with neuropathy. Probably because it is a new technology. Has anyone had a problem with neuropathy after receiving the vaccine? If so, which vaccine?

Hi. I wish I hadn't gotten the Mdrna shots. I am a 67 yr. old male, was in excellent health, no meds or issues. After my second shot in March, I started to get numbness, needles and burning in feet in June. Now it has been going to my hands and arms. After reading comments from everyone here, other sights and just last night on Fox News, they had 2 people that have been going through many tests and these circulation, neuropathy issues are becoming common cases! But the hospitals don't want to relate to covid and told them to see a psychiatrist!! I have been taking natural meds with little help, but now it appears that it's time to see the doctor. Are there any suggestions from the Clinic?

The same thing has happened to me and my feet seem to be getting worse while my hands have stayed the same. My doctor said he believes it is from the shot and should subside in 3 months. I really don’t believe it will be gone in 3 months the way everyone is sharing their stories. I so regret getting the shot and the more I read I wonder what it is going to do to our organs. Hope things get better for all of us.

I had the same symptoms . I spoke to my doctor and he offered no solution or no relation to the Covid vaccine 😡 he suggested that I stopped eating / drinking any thing that sparks inflammation . I followed his advice and It’s getting better ! Some other people on this thread also have had these symptoms. They seem to improve over time . Hang in there .

Can I ask what you stopped eating and drinking that helped?

Did the gabapentin cause you to gain weight? I was prescribed some for my neuropathy systems after my Covid vaccine and goin through menopause it has been a struggle to keep weight off. I am afraid to take it.

I am a 53 yr old female, had covid back in December. I received the Moderna vaccine in March, second shot in April and immediately started symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. No other variables in my life or lifestyle, so I am sure it was the vaccine that caused this. Maybe because I already had the virus, my body produced too many antibodies and they started to attack my nerves? Started with numb toes, pain in ball of foot, now have burning and cold sensation, worse at night, and it radiates up my ankles. I went to my primary care doc, she prescribed steroids for a week. The symptoms were much better, but came back after discontinuing the meds. I have been trying to get into a neurologist since- and where I live, the resources are very limited. New patient waits are well into the winter. My doctor recommended seeing a podiatrist that deals with neuropathy. I have an appointment today. I do not think it matters which vaccine you receive. I too have been researching the correlation between the vaccine and new onset neuropathy, and you are right. More and more cases being reported. Back in Feb, there was only 27 cases reported to VAERS. I too believe that physicians do not want to link the vaccine to any side effects, and am sure there are more cases out there than are being reported. I will update my own case after I see the podiatrist today, and see what they say.

I think most of these cases go unreported so it’s hard to trust the VAERS numbers

@bowerstx Our stories & symptoms sound remarkably similar. I also experience mild twitching in the arch of my right foot frequently, which is probably my most troubling symptom as it frequently makes me concerned about ALS (3 neuros have told me to stop worrying about ALS). I do know that twitching can be part of neuropathy though. What is the hand movement that you mentioned?

I've heard of others twitching- probably part of the whole spectrum. When I move my entire hand up and down, it has the vibratory shaking type movement. Same in my feet but that's harder to perceive.

I stayed away from EVERYTHING that causes inflammation :
Sugar
Carbs
Alcohol
**gluten , I have a sensitivity towards it

After the change in diet I did notice that the tingling did improve .
Week 3 of this and it is getting better .

My nephew had this . He got his second shot in April . He told me yesterday that it has improved( the twitching) but still experiences it several times a week . A change from daily twitches .
Hang in there
From what I’m hearing and experiencing it gets better over time

Thank you. The podiatrist didn’t even listen to the vaccine route I was telling him. Blamed on everything …. Back trauma (none), diabetes (no) deficiency in iron, B6, B12 (blood tests show normal levels of everything). Prescription for gabapentin and referral to a neurologist. So that’s 2 doctors who will not report my reaction.

I got my neuropathy from chemo. Did I have a choice, yes? Ovarian cancer is surely going to kill you in short time.
So, I chose chemo, knowing it can cause some adverse reactions. So, one year after treatments, I’m still in remission.
I do take gabepentin. Works for me.
Weight gain after chemo filled out the wrinkles in my arms and legs. I am 72. I had lost about 30 lbs during treatments.

Anyway, since everyone will react differently to any treatment or vaccine, your choice.
At this time, it’s been reported that over 99%
deaths from COVID , have been among the unvaccinated.

Yes, I agree. Exactly why I got vaccinated, both shots, even after already having Covid.

@bendeb thank you for the information 99% the deaths related to covid is high. How many deaths are you talking about in that study? To get the full picture, how many of those had health issues? Knowing the ages would be helpful. Overall how many of the total population survived the covid infection? From what we heard in the news media in the beginning of the pandemic most people who died were in nursing homes, sadly. I believe it is important to get enough information to form a decision as you had done and be comfortable with the decision. I agree with some members, knowing what may become a health issue due to vaccinations is important to consider when making a decision although the risks are low. Yesterday we heard on the news media of 100 people developing Guillian-Barre Syndrome as a result of the J&J vaccine. This syndrome is a nerve disorder which could lead to paralysis. 95 had to be hospitalized and one person died. We heard again that this is a rare occurrence and the benefits of the vaccines outweigh the risks. I don’t think those 100 people believed that. I would think the health officials can only mention the immediate benefits because they don’t know the long term effects. No one does. Time will tell. True, everyone reacts differently making it even harder to find a proper treatment helpful if one exists. I find it true people may not possess the important critical thinking skills or know mathematics as well but many seek the advice of their physicians or medical staff who should know better. Let me remind you those physicians know as much as they are being told with the vaccines. Perhaps they cannot offer much help. I wish you well.
