(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

I am so thankful to find this group, been rather scared. I have been reading the pages here for a week, still learning a lot. I have lots of questions, will ask about them one at a time. What are bronch washings, ordered by pulm or ID physician, done where? Thank you, thank you. - Barb
Thank you, Terri! (and again thank you, Katherine) !
Hi Barb, I am hoping that you no longer smoke; it exacerbates everything
lung related. Loved hearing that your mom had this and is alive at 92! That is
encouraging!
Amen, Katherine!
Did you mention to her that it was a low dose .05%? I can see why in your
case, your doc wouldn't want you on it. Most drs do not like this drug because
it is easy to abuse and do some damage. I am glad you have something that works
for you.
Hi Linda, don't know the answer to that. I have the opposite problem. I
feel like I am x-rayed waaayyyy tooo much! I am beginning to think my health
issues are due to an over abundance of x-rays. -Terri M.
If I hadn't read this post from you, I was going to say the same
thing after my previous post. That the Mayo docs want x-rays on a
regular basis. My doctor at the Mayo in Jacksonville does the same as yours does
in Minn. I go in on the 20th of this month to have those same procedures
done.
Terri, that sounds like great news! You got some stuff going on, but it
sounds like it is all managable. So happy for you! -Terri M.
The culture is the key thing here. Ideally three of them on consecutive
mornings according to the experts at the conference. (can take two yourself at
home two days prior to appt, keep refidgerated until appt for the third) The Drs
at the conference want to make this a standard procedure for culturing MAC in
the future.
Hi Sherry, are you saying that there are too many Broch/MAC posts? Or are
you getting the other subject sites as well? You can 'Unsubscribe' from the
other forums. If it is just us MAC people over-whelming your e-mail; maybe
choose to follow certain people and delete the rest. I have many hours of
breathing treatments a day (morning and night) so I appreciate the reading
material. Plus, everybody deserves a response, which I try to pitch in with.
Hope this helps. -Terri M.
