(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

@cila, Cila, I don't know if it all the antibiotics I have taken .. age or just what .. but I have been finding that 1/2 a Unisom just isn't doing the job .. hard time getting to sleep .. waking every 2-3 hours etc. Last night I took a whole Unisom along with the Magnesium .. found I slept MUCH better. Not recommending it .. just my experience. Am going to check it out with my pharmacist re long term use. If it is a problem will post. Hugs to all! Katherine
@windwalker Terri .. QUESTION: "keeping your lungs clean like doing the inhaled saline twice a day" what exactly do you mean by this? When I was told to hook up my Aerobika to a nebulizer with the saline solution .. nothing was really explained to me. I just assumed I was supposed to cough/Huff Cough afterwards to get up as much mucus as I could. Is THIS what you mean by "keeping your lungs clean like doing the inhaled saline twice a day, "? Also, do you hook your nebulizer up to your Aerobika? What is your process? Really trying to kick these 3 bacteria in the seat of the pants! Hugs to all Katherine
@jentaylor Jen, just wanted to tell you that your post "Mon. I took a 10 min slow paced walk around the block with my daughter, Emma & our dog! " .. inspired me! I have been feeling so lousy. .. BUT today I hopped on my Nordic Track and did one mile .. not my former 3.7 miiles .. BUT I did it along with 25% of my Yoga. I am really going to try to continue .. we are ALL on this journey together! Hugs to all! Katherine
Kick them Kate. You CAN do this! All the best for continued healing.

@katemn Congratulations Katherine!! Teresa
Paula, Wow! Thanks so much for the information. I had no idea! I'm doing pretty good. I have some bad days here and there, but am pretty good for the most part. thanks for asking. Blessings, Linda
Hello. Per the experts at the conference indicated that we need to soak our
showerheads every six months. I forgot what they said about duration. They
recommended vinegar over chlorine.
The other option is the one I took - I just take baths now. No more showers! I'm good as long as I don't drink my bath water! 🙂 Linda
Katherine, please do not reply to me. I have saved your last two posts
about antibiotic schedules, gerd and insomnia info. When I see a newcomer ask
about these things, I will jump in. please save your energy for healing! We want
you around for a loooooong time! Hugs! Terri M.
Thanks Becky! Wishing you the best also, - Terri M.
