(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

Yes. He has common sense. He knew what the meds did to me. My sputum culture did show I was on the correct antibiotics, however my body totally collapsed while taking them.
We are in a "wait mode" and I am doing great!
@windwalker - I don't think many people with NTM or breathing issues fully realize how great are the BENEFITS OF EXERCISE! I sure didn't . . . but came on board pretty quickly after my diagnosis and my pulmonologist's advice about exercise.

I second that opinion, Paula! By reading other's posts on this forum and then reading Beating Bronchiectasis, also touting the benefits of exercise, I hopped on the bandwagon. I was already working out with a trainer twice a week but had to stop from last Nov through Feb of this year when my MAC was so bad. Once I was on my meds for a couple of months and felt I could breathe again, I went back to the gym but also joined the YMCA - completely paid for by Medicare's Silver Sneakers program, and now I'm incorporating yoga and some other classes. The yoga has benefitted me tremendously. I do a therapeutic yoga class so nothing strenuous. It's not only helping me breathe better, but helping balance and strength too. I highly recommend yoga or pilates or any kind of movement. It works! Linda
Does Medicare pay for silver sneakers or is it your supplemental insurance? Thx.
It's a benefit of Medicare. Here is the link: https://www.silversneakers.com/. There is a box in the upper right corner of the screen that allows you to check your eligibility. Linda
Exercise is essential. Glad you are doing it. I did a one hour cardio class
and a 4 mile bike ride yesterday. Was pretty beat last night for it, but know
that it is good for me.
Hi Linda, is your Silver Sneakers program an actual class with a
teacher? Mine is, but I have heard that some Silver Sneakers is just free gym
membership. I had to pay for a gym membership in order to use the Silver
Sneakers program because I am under 65 yrs of age. (well worth the price)
Doesn't seem fair to be on disability for the rest of my life and cannot benefit
from senior programs. I cannot even buy secondary insurance!
It's a program and a class. The program pays for gym membership but at the Y, almost every class held is free with your membership. I also belong to YouFit where I do my personal strength training. Silver Sneakers pays the $10 fee but I pay the training fee. Now that I know about the Y, I'll be ending my YouFit membership and going to the Y for all my classes and workouts. There are Silver Sneaker programs at the Y but I don't take them as they aren't challenging enough for me.
Sounds like you are on a good regimen. Feels good, doesn't it?
