Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

What is the lowest level of kidney disease? My doctor claims I have Stage 3 and says it's the lowest level. Another doctor looked at my bloodwork and says my kidney function looks normal. Very confusing.

Warm water with lemon slice helps kidneys, cranberry juice if your permitted. Health food store has cranberry in capsules. Ask your doc. Just a suggestion.

@luftmensh1 Stages of kidney disease are based on a person's eGFR [estimated glomerular filtration rate]. This level is part of bloodwork done in renal panels. Take a look at you lab report, or get a copy of it, to look it up. Here is a resource to help you understand the ranges for each stage. https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/tv7177

Do you know what the cause of your kidney disease is? For some people, it might be from high blood pressure, or diabetes, or a congenital condition. It is important to understand the underlying causes, and have appropriate treatment.

@carnes I also am borderline Stage 3/4 Kidney Disease. Currently I follow five limiting diets: low fiber, low carbohydrates, low fat, low dairy and low oxilate. I eat popcorn, rice cakes, rice, Grape Nuts, Shredded Wheat, bananas, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, pears (few), cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, oranges (few), green beans, peas, corn, cabbage, cucumbers (raw), onions, tomatoes, avocadoes, summer squash, carrots (few and most often cooked), asparagus, chicken, lean beef, tuna, fresh/frozen fish, a little pork, and a small amount of dairy from cheese, yogurt, ice cream and milk. The way to enjoy the foods you can eat is with your seasoning. I had very little available to me during a long hospital stay and watched cooking shows. Now I often check recipe sites for ideas: FoodNetwork, Cooking.com, Allrecipies.com, to name a few. I do put canned dry beans in my chili, but we only eat that a few times a month. I encourage you to check some things out and would love to hear how you are doing. Good luck.

According to my reading pomegranate is good for your kidneys, as is lemonade. However, since I am on immunosuppressants for my transplant, I do not consume pomegranate. It interferes with the efficacy of the immunosuppressants.

@reale Here is a link from an article by kidney.org, about pomegranate juice. It is high in potassium, so if your blood work shows you have issues with that, you might want to check with your dr. https://www.kidney.org/news/ekidney/january12/PomogranateJuice

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am curious the reason for your kidney disease? I am Stage 4 due to a rare kidney disease that is blocking the filtering component. Right now my eGFR is 24%.

@reale Yes, uncontrolled blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney issues, along with diabetes. Are you under the care of a nephrologist for your kidney issues? I take two different blood pressure meds to help control that, to ease the burden on my kidneys.

I will be interested to know what your drs may say the cause of your kidney disease is!
