Is anyone on gabapentin for sleep? If so how much (dose) to start?

Hi, I dont take it for sleep, I take it for Spinal stenosis. It made me mildly sleepy for one night and that was it. And that is 400 mg three times a day. My wife has really major trouble sleeping and takes Alteril gelcaps. Hope some of this helps.

@lorena1egas, I don't take gabapentin but have read that one of it's uses is treating insomnia and anxiety. Drug.com has some reviews from users that you might find helpful.

Gabapentin isn't actually a "sleeping pill" but because it causes drowsiness, it is frequently prescribed to help people sleep who also have leg pains/discomfort. For me, it simply didn't work. I was told that it takes awhile for Gabapentin to work so I stayed on them for about two months. What is working best for me (a chronic insomniac) is Trazadone (less head fog in the morning) for sleep and prescription Naproxin for leg pain. Good luck! Sometimes it just takes experimentation to find what works best for you.

I take it for neuropathy and don't recommend it for off label uses, like sleep. Drowsiness is a side effect that wears off after a few days as you build a tolerance. After that there is withdrawal when you try to stop it.

@wilcy
I’ve taken anticonvulsant drugs for 55 years and only do so as a last result. I hope none of the side effects cause you any problems like memory, balance and cognition issues among many other potential side effects. I know studies are showing positive benefits for insomnia and wouldn’t be surprised if it’s eventually approved by the FDA as a treatment for insomnia.
Sweet dreams,
Jake
