@angviv

It’s been almost six months since my TKR and I have terrible burning on the right side of my knee. My doctor prescribed Voltairen gel but it doesn’t really help much. Dr. wants to prescribe Gabapentin, but I am afraid of the side effects. Has anyone been prescribed Gabapentin. Does it work?

I just started Voltaren yesterday. I am 6 weeks out. Fingers crossed that it works.

Hello! I had my 6 week post op check up. My surgeon is happy with both my extension and flexion so no surgical manipulation. I did ask him about the pain on the outside of my knee. He explained that when they did my total knee, they straightened my bone and this is causing my muscles to have to adjust also (i saw the x-rays and boy did they straighten it). PT and the PA also said the same thing with the pain. I am still taking a pain pill at night as it starts to really burn after all day. He did suggest I try Voltaren and I started that last night. I would ecstatic if this pain also clears up.

It sounds like you and your clinicians are on the same page. Congratulations. A long time ago, I used Voltaren and it was helpful for me and has been around a long time. It was Rx only then.

It takes a while for the pain to "clear up". Easy does it at this point.
May you be safe and protected.

TKA 7 weeks out

Had my total knee on March 8, 2021. I am hoping this may help some out there. It was painful. PT was hard. My pain didn’t get better til about 6 completed weeks. I was knock kneed so after straightening my bone, the outside muscles felt like there was a hot poker in them 24/7. I couldn't get complete extension. You keep working them. At my 6 week check up, everything checked out. We talked about the outside pain. He said the same, muscles have to completely do something different. You keep working them. He suggested Voltaran. I massage my scar and knee 3x a day. I got a percussion massager to help with my tight IT band. You keep working them. I am not sure if it is just time or a combination of everything but I feel I am finally on the mend. I still ice and still do my PT exercises (was discharged) at least 2-3 times a day. A new way of life.

Thank you for your positive post about knee replacement recovery. I think your attitude, figuring out how to manage the discomfort and continue to heal, is probably helping your progress a great deal. Absolutely there is pain when we are healing from any major injury or surgery, and consistent stretching and therapy, while no fun, is one of main keys to success.
Having leg realignment as well as joint replacement made yours a complex surgery - yesterday one of my friends was explaining the whole process of straightening the legs during replacement, the difficult recovery for muscles, tendons & ligaments and how much better she has felt in the 3 years since. When I had hip replacement, I had limped for so long that I needed to learn how to walk properly all over again before my pain went away.
Keep up the good work, and let us know how you progress.
What is the main activity you hope to resume when you are healed?

Good afternoon @debbyjoy, your pain is getting very old......I agree. I have only one foot with pain. Both feet have tingles. The only thing I can think of is an old injury that did not heal correctly and required a separate do-over. Bone spurs were rubbing the tendons and ligaments creating pain and discomfort. So they wrapped a plastic noose around them to keep them from rubbing. It worked well even though I can always feel the difference between the two feet.

What are you using now? Have you tried specialized ice packs with long-term freezing gel? I got gel-filled mittens for my hands....maybe they have them as slippers. Take a look at Amazon.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.

I had total knee replacement on April 20th I have a major burning sensation in the top of my foot this was my left leg they gave me a form of Lyrica are the nerve tissue I'm concerned that this will not be a lifelong problem that is it possible that the surgeon screwed up one of the nerves in the knee

I had total knee replacement surgery on my left leg April 20th the knee is healing quite dicey but the tropic nerve pain and firing in the top of my foot is devastating the top of my foot looks like it is sunburn and unless I keep at highly elevated To reduce the redness once I put the foot on the ground and put pressure on the foot the pain is excruciating They now have me on a nerve block pain Call pregablin.
It's not working.

Hello @kevingciccone, Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain after your knee replacement surgery. My surgeon really got on my case when my recovery wasn't going as well as he thought it should. I didn't have the pain you do but I did have a lot of redness and swelling of the leg. I was not icing and elevating as much as frequently as he wanted. It also helped me at night when sleeping to have a pillow under the mattress at the bottom part of the bed to slightly elevate my legs during the night.

Did your surgeon or care team give you some directions on icing and elevating during the day?

I know it's only been 3 weeks in 4 days since my surgery but I was not prepared for this severe nerve pain the top of my foot when it is the down position turned red like sunburn and putting pressure on it is extremely painful elevated which is about 12:14 A-day a colour turned somewhat normal I am very concerned that this may be a very long process or a permanent nerve issue. Thank you for your input.
