Abnormal Black Dots in Mouth

Posted by Aaliyah @aaliyahdavison46, May 6, 2021

While flossing this morning I noticed two small, black dots that look like moles on the inside of my check. I have no symptoms associated with them, but they were definitely not there yesterday and must have developed over night. Does anyone know what this could be? I am 20 years old and have no history of oral cancer in my family. I do not drink, smoke, or ingest harmful chemicals. I have an appointment to get this checked out on May 17th.

@aaliyahdavison46 Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect! We’re not medical professionals so we can’t diagnose from that perspective. But we are able to rely on experiences and valuable insights we’ve learned along our personal journeys.

In my “former life” I was a certified dental assistant for 32+ years. So I’ve a pretty good idea what those two dots are. You bit your cheek. Probably while sleeping. ☺️ You didn’t actually break the skin so they’re more like ‘blood blisters’ or broken capillaries. They should disappear in a couple of days. I’m guessing they’ll be gone well before your appt on May 17th.

I see you’re a radiography student! What a great career ahead of you. Are you wanting to specialize in any particular area?

Hi Lori,

Thank you for the comment! I really hope it was just a bite. It’s still there, but I will monitor and give an update on it. So broken capillaries can appear black? That’s what seemed so strange to me—that they’re brownish black.

Also yes I will be graduating this Sunday and specializing in radiation therapy this fall! I’m super excited. Radiography is a great profession and I love how many specialties there are!

@aaliyahdavison46 I’m 99.9% positive that’s what the dots are in your mouth. I hate ever saying 100% on anything. 😉 It will take several days to a week for those to resorb into the tissue. Just like a bruise.
I have one dot in my mouth right now because I bit my cheek last night while eating popcorn.
If you were to see the dots with more of direct light they would appear a reddish tint. Think of dried blood...it turns brownish. So take a deep, relaxing breath on this one. ☺️
Congratulations on your graduation this Sunday and good luck in your further education in radiation therapy! You’ve chosen a great career path. Wishing you all the best, Lori.

Hi Lori,

One of the dots is starting to look a little lighter today. I had my mom look at it too with a flashlight and she said it had a reddish color. Thank you for the kind words and support, I appreciate your help on this one! I feel much more relieved. 🙂

Kind regards,
Aaliyah
