Anyone experienced nipple soreness post menopause?
I am 58, post menopausal. Within about the last week my nipples have become tender, similar to how it used to feel before or on my period. They also are more flat, and the aereola is less pink than normal. They used to change with temperature, but now seem to be more flattened out in general. I don't feel sick otherwise, and am not on any medications. Anyone out there who has experienced this kind of change or tenderness?

@lisalucier, @nolano, Good afternoon, I am jumping in here to crash this party. I am a caregiver for a prostate cancer patient. He and another co-radiation buddy both have developed painful nipples and breast tissue around the nipples. You can actually feel the denseness in the area around the nipple. It is only in the left breast.
Jay contacted his local PCP and went in so he could check it out. He blew it off as if it just couldn't be....told him not to be concerned. Bob went to Mayo and they took him through mammograms and other tests. The bottom line: this is a side effect of Lupron that seems to appear after treatment. Jay had Lupron in 2016 before radical prostate surgery. Bob had Lupron after his surgery(?) and radiation treatment in 2019. Both of them noticed the pain and tissue changes earlier this year (2020). So you say it is hormonal. It evidently is. I am going to check in with those two again to see what else they know.
Have a day with only joy, no pain.
Chris
Am a 48 yr.old women postmenopausal.
I have always had sensitive nipples but as I get older and now less menstrual cyclees, I have to wear nipple covers all the time. And my nipples are red and sore . Is there any help for this?
@lucybear1 Id like to add my welcome to connect also. Your nipples shouldn't be red and sore. Have you gone back to your gynecologist ? She should be the one that can help you . I wish you well
Several of you have mentioned that you've had nipple soreness. Wanted to check in and see how things are going with that. I believe your responses will be helpful to others in this Connect discussion.
@lucybear1 - how is the redness and soreness you were experiencing? Do the nipple covers help at all?
@nolano - how are you doing?
@oldertoo - do you still have the flatness and soreness you talked about?
Yes. I'm 58 and I've recently developed very tender nipples. Usually flat areola and now acting.like I'm 25 or something and having a period. My mammogram 2 monhs ago was normal . I've also been extremely fatigued..not sure if hormonal.or should get that tested or what
Hi
I don’t know what to think because it feels like I am pregnant again even though I’m 56 and that’s impossible and I have been experiencing vaginal discharge and sore breasts that have gotten worse and now they’re so painful to the touch that I can’t even bear it and my doctor doesn’t know what to think and the only thing I can think of is maybe my T4 is too high because I have had thyroid cancer and had to have my thyroid removed and take the synthetic hormone which makes my T4 high …and possibly affecting my hormones??? but I don’t know and because of Covid it’s so hard to get the doctors to see me. I am very worried and confused.
Hi @elsierosie and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will see I added your comment to the discussion that is discussing your concern. I did this so that you can connect with the members that have experienced similar issues. I know that in perimenopause and the beginning of menopause you hormones fluctuate a lot.
Have you asked your doctor for a blood test? When did the pain and the discharge begin?
A week ago but I had discharge last month too.. I will be talking to my endocrinologist on Wednesday but I’m not sure he will take this seriously
I know something is up…
I also had sore nipples recently and today dark brown vaginal discharge. 56, no period for 18 months, take Levothyroxine.
Did you get any joy from seeing your endocrinologist??
Hi,
He did some hormone tests snd, with the exception of my testosterone level being .3 when the range was 2-2.9, all other levels he said were in the normal range for a post menopausal woman. My general dr said that sometimes, and it’s rare, we can ovulate.. and that I may get brown spotting soon. Hasn’t happened yet but my boobs and nipples are not as sore anymore- just itchy and red in some areas. My t4 is quite high but we have to suppress my TSH so that I don’t get thyroid cancer again. Did you get the Covid vaccine? I gut Pfizer in February ( both shots) and I am reading stories about some women who are having menstral irregularities as a result.. did you ask your dr? Keep me posted. I definitely think I have some hormonal stuff going on…
Take care
