Hello @question5 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will notice I have moved your post into the COVID-19 Group to allow for more member connections on this topic.
I found the following article that may be of help to understand how the vaccines work.
Different Types of Covid-19 Vaccines:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/different-types-of-covid-19-vaccines/art-20506465
Have you read or heard of this being a concern?
R u asking about the anemia ? I’m wondering if waiting until my blood levels ie- hemoglobin ferritin rise then I will optimize the vaccine and receive more protection
@question5 I found this article that you may find helpful.
Normal Iron and Hemoglobin Levels Are Needed for Optimizing the Response to COVID-19 Vaccination:

I am not a medical professional, so would always suggest consulting with your doctor in order to make the decision that is best/right for you with your unique health concerns and risks. Have you reached out to ask for a recommendation from him/her?
Hi, yes I read that article hence my reaching out to mayoclinic. I am curious as to the approach drs at Mayo advise. My dr. Initially when my hemoglobin was around 7.5 and other numbers were low, said to wait until we retake bloodwork. But I approached her in email last week and she said to get the vaccine I don’t have to wait. However no further explanation.
Thanks !
I just read your messages and wonder what the doctors' thoughts are about your question? My patient head and thinking say to me that I want to be able to get the best results possible. And, it seems the importance of iron and other such are pretty important to your inflammatory system and others.
I have worked the last 2+ years to raise my ferrous levels from very low, similar to yours, as well as potassium, magnesium, sodium, kidney and liver functions, etc. And, it took that long to get the iron levels in the low normal range without IV therapy. The doc told me it takes a very long time for iron to metabolize and be absorbed and get the number up. She was right, but I came close to IV treatment.
During these years I also found other diagnoses that caused my adrenal glands to not perform properly and had time to get that resolved before the vaccine issue arose.
Maybe she wants you to have the vaccine level of protection now and not wait until the numbers are up. Only way to know is to ask her.....I'd have to know her thinking before getting the vaccine. Then, if I agreed, get it as fast as possible and get on with improving these other areas.
That makes sense to me. Blessings in your search for answers....elizabeth
Has anyone with low ferrous levels made a follow up comment on this issue as it is an ongoing discussion among patients with this condition who have not yet taken the vaccine.
Hello and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @deelee. Thank you for joining this discussion to nudge members from earlier this year who were actively talking about this in relation to getting the vaccine.
Members like @ess77 and @question5 may have new information to share now that several months have passed.
What are you hearing from your healthcare provider?
Hi I am one of them who is low hemoglobin I am waiting for my hemoglobin to get normal to get the vaccine...
@patts2021- Good morning and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Are you experiencing this after having covid or the vaccine? How are you waiting for it to become normal?
Can you tell me a little - do you have ongoing or recent anemia? Are you receiving iron or another treatmen or working with a doctor to resolve?
