Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

80° today and unbelievable as it is I haven’t had any candy or any other goodies for three days so I won’t be carrying anything with me.
My apple tree is blooming. I used to always have flowers in my yard year round. The good ol days.
Im going to drive around and measure out 1.5 miles and give it a shot.
Jake
@jakedduck1 Love the picture, jake, and what's wrong with 1.3 miles? I think that's a good thing. You were outside, walking in fresh air, enjoying the lake and the adorable ducks....I commend you, Jake, for making the effort and actually doing it. And, with all your cooking, you don't sound lazy to me.
Again, congrats on the walk. blessings and everything in moderation, right? elizabeth
Nice! No sweets, wow, giving you a pat on the back! Keep up the good work.
2.2 miles today. Was going to walk along the creek but forgot where where I was going so walked around the neighborhood. Maybe tomorrow?
My walk yesterday was heavenly. We went on a day trip to South Padre Island and visited favorite spots, then drove "to the end of the road" and strolled the nearly deserted beach, on both loose and packed sand. So much fun, and a great little escape. Today it's back to familiar roads, but maybe next week if it cools from the mid-nineties we'll head for the state park trails again.

@sueinmn I am so glad you had a great walk yesterday. From everything you’ve told us, you really needed it. Walking is such good therapy! I hope that you and your daughter will be ok. Lots of hugs your way! Becky
Didn’t have much of a fun walk today. It was freezing! We’re due to get snow for the next 3 days. Woe is me
@becsbuddy, Was grumbling to daughter in Boulder yesterday about how the overnight drop in temp from 88 on Sunday to at freezing Mon. morning with next many days of the same was interfering outrageously with my outdoor walking/gardening efforts.
Mom, it began snowing here last night with a few more days of it predicted. Okay, while she is much younger and hardier and still managed a shorter hike with her friend, I'm with you on this one, Becky. Being outdoors is out of the question until weather returns to a much more legitimate level!
@becsbuddy I look out the window into brilliant sunshine, and afternoon highs of 70. But in the mornings, we are at 30 degrees, with ice. Not a good combination with unsure footing and back issues! Pacing the floor in the house, the cat gave up on following me around. Makes her dizzy. Fire is burning merrily in fireplace, but she has camped herself on sunny windowsill in laundry porch.

I laughed when I read this. Two months ago I was pining for my "valley" so I could walk, yesterday my kids reported snow & icy roads at home - today I woke up in the valley to 80F at 7:30 am with high pollen and high humidity - so staying largely indoors. 2 more days of the oppressive humidity, then we get welcome rain and a cold front (highs around 80.) We'll be walking for hours each day.
