How did you manage the pain side effects of Prolia?

Posted by pine4234 @pine4234, Oct 26, 2018

I had prolia injection a week ago. I've developed lower back pain and severe spasms. The spasms are so bad I can hardly get out of bed or even out of a chair. Is there anything I can do or take to alleviate this awful pain.

@artist01 that price tag is a bit steep for me, even at one capsule a day ... but perhaps I can go to our Healthy Planet here in Toronto and ask for an affordable alternate brand ...? Is AOR the name of the company that makes it? Where in Canada are you, if you don’t mind my asking?

I do remember taking curcumin capsules a few years ago for my fibromyalgia pain but stopped when I found they had no effect after taking them for six months.

@rashida Yes, the price is steep for the Curcumin capsules. Termeric pills may be cheaper. The brand name "AOR" that I have stands for Advanced Orthomolecular Research.

@artist01 thank you! Will check it’s price at the Healthy Planet here ... I find their prices are generally lower than other stores like GNC, etc. ...

@parrotqueen how much turmeric do you take per day? I live in Toronto and I don’t think we get the brand you take, here. I just started on Prolia in January (next dose in July). My doctor recommended it to prevent fractures because of my age (75 this year).

You can get my brand off Amazon or through Starwest-Botanicals. It is about $45 for 500 capsules of 500 mg each. I have a dreadful skin disease with no cure or treatment - and turmeric stopped that disease! I take 2,000 - 3,000 mg per day. It doesn't cost as much as other brands and yet it is the freshest, most potent of them all. Cucumin is a component of turmeric - and I believe this brand is rich in cucumin. It's the best I've found and I've been taking it maybe 20 years. I'd say 15-20 years at least;. I tried all kinds. It is the strongest anti-inflammatory food of all. You may not need any other blood thinner depending upon how much turmeric you take. You can also get 120 capsules for a lot less money if you just want to try them.

Hello dublin18 and @parrotqueen, yes, the osteoporosis Fb site is great. I haven't spent enough time there. I think I have over 500 emails from our Neuropathy group so I am so far behind that I can't possibly catch up. I fear someone will go unanswered 🥺. Wow, that's a lot more Boron than we thought we could take safely!! Was there a lot of people who are taking 120mg. daily? Have their scans improved? Have they stopped fracturing? There are some in this group that believe strontium is good. I've read your persuasion on it. I've added baby spinach to my diet almost daily and am eating more green leafys. So wish I had learned all the things I 've learned from Connect family before losing so much weight on such a low calorie diet! GGggrrr! 😠

Hello dublin18, are you from or in Dublin, Ireland? If I haven't already said it, WELCOME to the group!! Hope you find as much support, encouragement, information, and inspiration that I have found here.

Warmest wishes, Sunnyflower 🌸🌹😊

Be careful with that much spinach - it has oxalates which cause kidney stones! I go with arugula. Dr. Jorge Fleches (on You Tube) was the first doctor I knew of taking 120 mg of boron daily. Since then I have met a lot of people with different diseases (not just osteoporosis) that take 120 mg per day. I am sicking with 24 mg per day and I've stopped fracturing. I did stop taking calcium as I was having heart problems. I was going into v-tach. Calcium is powerful stuff and you should never take it without taking vitamin K2 (mk7, mk7). I take InnovixLabs brand of vitamin K2. I'm sure there are other good ones. One thing the nutritionists say is don't take calcium that has magnesium. Vitamin D3, and K2 all mixed in - take each one separate. They recommend oyster shell calcium - nothing fancy. They also say to keep track of how much you are getting in your food and subtract that out from any you are taking in pill form. Also, you need vitamin K and vitamin K2 for different things - The K2 should be (mk4, mk7, or both) as this is the form that humans absorb. If you don't like the taste of natto, you should get it from a capsule (they are tiny). I pay $20 for a three-month supply. I'm going to call today to make an appointment for my DEXA scan - my old order timed out so had to wait till it was called in again. But I have stopped fracturing. I will keep you posted. I got my second vaccination for Covid yesterday so I want to go in a week or two at the earliest. Dr. Fauci says we are probably going to have another surge in 2-3 weeks.

@parrotqueen thank you! I think I will order that brand from Amazon and give it a try, but I think I will start at two capsules a day (one in the morning, one at night) and see how it works with my stomach. Someone suggested Curcumin AOR and I checked it out at my health food store - at $57 a bottle of 60 capsules it was not affordable for me! I didn’t even check the dosage per capsule because I went into sticker shock! lol. $45 for 500 capsules feels less painful. lol.

@hopeful33250 I did my first shot on Thursday under the guidance of a "Clinical Educator" from Tymlos, on Facetime. That went well, my heart rate did not go up, or if it did it was only by a few beats. I tend to have a low heart rate anyway - resting heart rate is about 53 usually. I had a very slight amount of light-headedness for a brief amount of time. I did my second shot last night. I had the same, but I also did have some slight nausea, nothing bad enough for me to be concerned.

I have heard from others that taking it at night is good because then you can go to sleep if you have side-effects, but to do it a bit before you are ready to go to bed because if you have a rapid heartbeat it may interfere with falling asleep. I went to bed about a half hour after taking it and all was well. Hopefully it will continue that way but some people don't get bad side-effects for a number of months.

I am very hopeful. If I do have side-effects I can easily discontinue it, but I hope that does not happen. It's just so darned expensive. I am on Medicare so I used their website to find the drug plan that would be best for the drugs I am taking. That led to a change in drug plans, saving me about $800 a year! The new drug plan does have a hefty deductible though so the first month cost me $900. It will be about $500 next month I think and stay there until I hit the donut hole at which point it will go up, and then down quite a bit when I come out of the other side of the donut hole. I went through this xifaxan when I was pre-transplant too so I am familiar with the coverage.

Hi @contentandwell
As it has been a few weeks now since your Tymlos injection, I was wondering how you were feeling. Any side effects?

@hopeful33250 Thanks for asking, I've been meaning to report back.
Initially I thought I might be having a little light-headedness shortly after but that was only for a few days. Now I do not seem to be having any ill effects! I started on March 4th so I'm almost done with the first month and pretty happy with it.

Some people report having to urinate frequently after giving themselves the shot but I already have that problem, being incontinent and having to drink about 70 ounces of non-caffeinated fluid a day so if that is an effect it's not noticeable for me. The other effect people seem to often have is increased heart rate. I have an Apple watch and a separate heart monitor that my son gave me so I've been able to check on that and my heart rate has been in the low 70s. My resting heart rate is in the 50s but if I am at all active it ranges from 60s to 70s so that has not been a problem either.

Hi Erika! Hey girls! This all looks different! No view and reply button. Will all the girls in this email receive my reply without me typing their Mayo name? @parrotqueen, @rashida
I haven't been very active for a while. Not well. More new diagnoses following more diagnostics. Esophagus disease has worsened. Spine pathology has worsened as well. Neuropathy.... I didn't think it could be worse but it is.

I am deeply humbled and beyond grateful that Almighty God has allotted me an extra measure of faith. I am basking in His presence, comfort and live and trust Him completely in my circumstances. I KNOW He has a purpose in it all. It's His peace through Christ which surpasses human understanding that gets me through. I wish the same for all.

Romans 8:18 " I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us."
