I've had burning mouth for a couple years. After much research I found that the medication for severe acid reflux and Barrett's Esophagus had lowered my B-12 and Iron levels to a dangerous level. I started taking supplements and my levels have came back to almost normal. This can also be from chronic dry mouth due to certain medications. I always keep some sugar free mints on me which helps a great deal with having a dry mouth.
Dear 11camaro... DID GETTING YOUR B-12 AND IRON LEVELS BACK TO ALMOST NORMAL RELIEVE YOUR BMS AT ALL? Your post caught my eye as my husband has taken meds for severe acid reflux and has Barrett's Esophagus... among other things. He is also a recent cancer survivor and a diabetic AND has this awful condition WITH severe TMJ at the same time. He can eat nothing except milk shake consistency liquids... Not even pureed foods as they are too thick to maneuver over his tongue. He has lost so much weight, the depression is horrible... and he has only had this for only about 4 months!!! Right now he is on B-12 shots and lots of other B vitamins, Gabapentin, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. He must take about 50 pills a day... which is a struggle in itself. So far nothing has helped... but I know it will all take a long time... if it helps at all! Jesus God... we need to do something to draw attention to RESEARCH NEEDED on this miserable, debilitating condition as more and more people will most likely be affected as we continue to trigger it unknowingly !!!
Hello, karvar16. Just wanted to check in with you and see if you found the care you were looking for with a doctor specializing in burning mouth syndrome? How is your pain these days?
I've had bms for a year. Finally found some relief with claritin. Reading said it probably histamine intolerance. Women in menopause can develop it. Allergic to foods and many things. My dr sending me to allergist. Dr seems to think also i have histamine intolerance. Many foods have more than others. Just hope I get a histamine intolerance test. Hope to be better soon.
I have seen an oral dermatologist at one point at Mayo but cannot remember her name. I dont think I had burning, but everything tasted funny like metal. Good luck with treatment.
