My husband is bipolar and the best thing you can do is to get treatment. There is medication that will help balance you out. It won't always be perfect, but you will definitely have more good days than bad.

I have BPD and they have a new therapy out there that might help you its called DBT therapy and they help you to deal with certain situations and how to respond to people. My issue was I also said yes to everyone and never said no. I have learned to say no. Most mental health clinics are now doing DBT therapy. I hope it helps hun, I have been where you are now and there is hope 🙂

I read somewhere that BPD symptoms can also be symptoms of thyroid disorder, might be worth investigating (depression, body ache, obesity, joint pain, female problems, anxiety, insomnia, and so the list goes....). Good luck as you research.

Getting a DX was the best thing I ever did. But it took me over a year to finally admit someone else may be right. Not being able to trust and being paranoid, kept me looking for a better DX. Always I was looking for a miracle. Now it is one day at a time. I try to stay aware. DBT can be researched online.

If you truly do have BPD, seeking treatment and actually taking it seriously are very important steps. Its also important that you know that you are not alone, and I can assure you that you are not. Its hard for some of us to reach out, but finding that courage to accept it and not be ashamed is a big step. Its not easy, but with the support of friends and family, you can get there. Its not a hopeless fight. Don't give up on yourself. Your worth fighting for.

We cannot diagnose anyone but we can support you along the way because you are not alone. A lot of people live with mental illnesses and it does not mean that your goals and dreams still cannot be achieved.
Good luck dear,

The best thing you can do is meet with a psychiatrist who will make an assessment and inform you of what she/he believes according to certain criteria what your diagnosis may be.
Either way treatment is important and I agree dialectical behavioral therapy is an evidence based form of treatment that will help you develop healthy coping strategies for dealing with emotions.

One of the things I thought was a very insightful comment I heard once was that we all get sick now and then, a cold, a fever, sometimes the flu and unfortunately some of us get really bad diseases. So? Why can't we imagine it possible that our brain can get sick now and then? Well, it does. Becoming aware of that reality and learning simple skills to keep it healthy really really helps. This DBT that everyone speaks of I suspect could be of great help in guiding us to learn some skills to "take control" of some of the illnesses our brain experiences. I am no therapist or professional but if I would have understood this as a young man, I guarantee you I would have kept myself from a whole bunch of suffering...Good luck out there..

Hey,

Was diagnosed with BPD (Also known as EUPD - Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder) back in 2012 and I didn't have a clue what it was. I actually became frantic when I was diagnosed during a stay in hospital in Dublin. You really need an opinion from someone who is trained to spot the signs of a Personality Disorder like a Mental health professional. My symptoms are as follows:

Black and White thinking
Very impulsive
Problems with displays of rage
Frantic trying to avoid being left alone
Feeling humiliated
Feeling severe panic
Feeling deeply ashamed of my actions
Severe paranoia if stressed
Past episodes of self harm and suicide attempts

Now, I'm not sure if everyone has every one of the traits, but they have been the ones that I've dealt with and sometimes still do. Just don't Google BPD and self diagnose yourself like so many people so often do. Get to a GP or Psychiatrist and have them assess you. Good luck.

Hi, @yangedd - I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. This information you've given on the symptoms you've experienced with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or EUPD – Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder – plus your tips on finding the right provider to assess you are very helpful.

I'm hoping that @bpd31mneedhelp @archangel @gkent @janechaz1 @jettab @cle64may09 @yin73 and others will return and share how they or their loved one are doing currently with BPD. @gailb and @johnbishop also may have some thoughts.

While awaiting these members joining in, you may be interested in reading this Mayo Clinic information on BPD: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/borderline-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20370237

@yangedd - wondering what treatment you may have had for BPD and what might have helped you?
