Constant dizziness/imbalance

Posted by Chester @chester, Jul 21, 2011

I'm a 47 year old male, and I've been experiencing a non-spinning dizziness/imbalance feeling for over ten months now. It all started after having a sinus and ear infection. I've had and MRI of the head, balance testing, blood tests for any deficiencies, heart tests, all of which are negative. I am suppose to see a neurologist next. Anyone else having similar problems?

A family member first had dizziness/imbalance after taking a very strong antibiotic for a sinus infection. If you were treated with antibiotics, consider reviewing the literature about side effects. The drug she was on was Cipro. She has been working with a vestibular specialist and it has been helping. Best of luck.

Any time someone talks about unexplained dizziness I recall how I for two years went to the doctor and physical therpist to get help for spells of severe vertigo. The answer had nothing to do with a medical problem but was a reaction to the chemicals in my hair product and my make up. When I stopped using them the dizziness was gone for good. Anytime you have dizziness or feel disoriented be suspicious of anything you are using that has toxic chemicals. They are in almost everything.

Did they rule out an inner or middle ear infection?

I'm not sure if the doctor's have ruled this out, but I haven't. I am suppose to see a neurologist next, and am also trying to get an appointment at Mayo Clinic in regards to this problem. I will be asking about the infection possibility.

I'm a 59 year old female and have had the same issues since March 2011. Started with sinus infection. I've had no-spinning, but dizzy and balance. CT Scan, heart, angiogram, EKG, EEG all good. Ear,Nose & Throat (ENT) Specialist diagnosed me with Vestibular Optic Reflex. My eyes feel like they are trying to cross, nausea, blur vision and sounds drive me crazy. Life changing for me. I've seen every doc imagineable...can't find a cure. I'm working with Physical Therapist for the balance which is better. The other, no. My neurologist agreed with the ENT diagnosis. I'm just not so sure. My ears have ringing sensation, my eyes feel like they are trying to focus, but can't. The PT and ENT continue to reassure me that the inner ear hairs are getting a wrong signal - telling my brain that I'm moving, when I'm not, which cause my eyes to google around too. It's just been horrible, so I can empathize with you. Recommended Zofran for nausea. Meccalizine for motion. 2mg Xanax for nervousness. I even had a tooth extracted that I thought could be causing the problem with the 8th Cranial Nerve....nope. I sure hope we find answers. Good luck to you, I hope you learn something new to help you.

Since my last reply I've seen a neurologist and had another MRI, but with dye this time. It takes forever to get appointments and results this year. After many calls the neurologist's nurse finally called and said the MRI looked normal. I am waiting now to get into the Mayo clinic's Dizziness and Balance dept. I'm sure another couple months out the way it's been going. I take Ativan once a day which helps reduce symptoms for awhile to get through the work day. If I ever get this figured out I'll definately be sharing that information. I never see any followup information from people that have returned to normal on this or any of the other sites I've read. Hope we get some positive answers soon.

In early October I was diagnoised with CSD, Chronic Subjective Dizziness. I've been doing physical therapy exercises since then to help with the constant dizziness, but so far it hasn't helped. I'll be checking back with my doctor next week.
