Teeth, own or false, dentist costs, extractions etc.

Just wondered if enough folk interested. As a 77 year old had molar extracted last December and one 2 days ago. As I have no family doctor (shortage) and a list of physical illnesses and mental past and present and some medication reactions, I have been checking Internet. I used to check Web.md and almost relied on it but twice found incorrect advice....well one was definitely incorrect the other says gum should be healing in 2 weeks and I was quite worried as mine took so long last time, but other sites and dental pages say 6 weeks to fully heal etc. etc. Ask the dentist? Well with Covid and plastic covering each room and busy busy, its 'IN AND OUT' as quickly as possible. So glad I discovered mayor connect a months or so ago.... so helpful especially hearing from those who understand our illnesses or have them or have conquered them; I still feel people think "I am putting it on." hi lioness, my at sign not working on keyboard; wondering how you make out today; i have to go back to dentist tomorrow the one he took out last Thursday has a bone chip in it...not looking forward to him digging around. Woke up at 6 with occular migraine, had them for long time, but several times, this being about the 4th, as waiting for flashing lights to stop, then cannot remember names of doctors, pills, neighbours etc.My daughter found something on Internet about it but i dont feel like reading yet. Takes about 2 hours and then i can think straight again, very unnerving. \
Then the EnT i waited over 6 months for phoned and started yelling at me... i put phone on speaker so husband could hear... he was upset i was mentioning things that happened since i saw him 2 yrs ago and he said he is dealing with patients with cancer etc. etc. he said has 18 people begging to see him etc., told me to stop talking and listen to him etc. I have never ever been spoken to by a dr like that, and he said 3 times, i have to go! Total ten minutes. at the end he said if you want at ct scan i will give you one (not knowing i had one last year which i was going to tell him via another emerge clinic.) so a completely upsetting day and crying and just lying here.... its just one effing thing after another. in themselves not as bad as others i do realize but when i make my list, its enough for me! I 'do' feel for our 2 ent's for 54,000 people but i waited so long about ear issues and he started talking about tmj 30 years ago and my dentist now says i dont have it...anyway, .as they say, just venting, but i then start blaming myself for how i handle things. I am sure its covid etc affecting drs etc. as 2 years ago, and he took took out half my thyroid 10 yrs ago, he was very nice, i was shocked. I am lifted when i hear others stories of what they are going through and how they are getting through it but i just cant do it..... xxx

...hi lioness hope you dont have to wait long for your new teeth.... just having sore from one out each side, bottom, has made a big difference to what I am eating; did they give you any time frame... have you lost weight during this treatment. Thanks for your good wishes, I so wish I had recorded that ten minute phone call...tantamount to bullying IMO but gotta concentrate on feeling better and getting up tomorrow. I did phone the referring clinic doctor's office to tell them, she was shocked too. Hope you have a nice rest of the day, its almost 8pm here, probably have an early night 9pm as haven't slept since 4. 🌹

@lioness I’m so happy the Oragel is working for you! Mouth sores are horrible to deal with. Speaking, eating, swallowing...it’s all affected! I bit my tongue the other day while eating! Crazy how much that little nip hurts!

A suggestion for when you have impressions taken. You’ll have an assistant taking them. Make sure you tell her that you have a very dry mouth and then really goop up on your lips with some chapstick, Burts bees lip balm, Carmex or Vaseline before inserting the trays. Inserting the trays will stretch your lips a bit so doing that ahead of time will keep your lips soft. Also, ask for a couple sips of water to swish in your mouth right before they take the impressions too. That will help you.

A trick to tolerating the impressions is to relax and remember to breath through your nose. As an assistant, I made sure to rhythmically breathe so that my patient could hear me and encourage them to breath through their noses. It kept their focus and made the time pass quickly during the impression. ☺️

...just for a happy ending, well not quite, the dr who phoned and shouted at me... i did end up writing a very polite note about how he treated me and April 3 he phoned my spouse and I and apologized... still went in about his own issues not mine, but ... Then copy of report he sent to referring dr. which had quite a few errors in but over with now. I think possible he has burnout from covid or ? Waited a year for nothing but hard to go out of town for me, but mayhave to. He actually thanked me for writing to him, said his family has mentioned this (attitude?) to him..... so I feel I did the right thing. Too bad I went through it as found it upsetting from a professional,. No cure for tinnitus anyway, or apparently my ear pain. I know many hae it.... can we wish for a cure one day? J.

@lioness Congrats on your new ‘pie biters’. Hehe. Joking aside, I’m sorry your gums are sore. But it is very common after first getting partials or full dentures. Tissue over bone is only so forgiving. It’s soft, while the partial and bone are hard. Pressure sores are miserable but are easily remedied. Also, the clasps can be too tight so they may need to be bent a teeny bit.
To adjust the partial the dentist will trim away some of the acrylic over the sore area. Frequently to aid in finding ‘the spot’ he’ll apply a little white creamy Indicator paste to your gum tissue or the inside of the partial.
Then place the partial back in your mouth. The cream will leave a mark on your tissue or it will be rubbed off the too thick area inside the partial so he can see where trimming is needed.
All the adjusting is done on the partial, not your gums.

Just so you’re aware, there might be more trimming needed over the first few months as your bone and tissue from the extractions continue modify. Don’t hesitate to call and have this done. It won’t go away on its own.
In the meantime, if you have that Orajel ointment that can help with the discomfort. Smile pretty!! Lori.

@lioness 😀 Hopefully only one trip for adjustments to the partial. It’s easy to trim away some acrylic but not easy to replace. You don’t want it too loose either. 😊
