CDC releases new guidelines for people who had COVID vaccinations
Hi everyone- I just received announcements of CDC's new guidelines for people who have had vaccinations.
When You’ve Been Fully Vaccinated: How to Protect Yourself and Others
Below is just a summary of these guidelines.
The CDC defines people who are fully vaccinated as those who are two weeks past their second dose of the Moderna and Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine or two weeks past a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. People who are vaccinated are protected and there is growing evidence that they don't spread Covid-19, but scientists are still trying to understand how long vaccine protection lasts. "The level of precautions taken should be determined by the characteristics of the unvaccinated people, who remain unprotected against Covid-19," the guidelines said.
The CDC says fully vaccinated people can:
- Visit other vaccinated people indoors without masks or physical distancing.
- Visit indoors with unvaccinated people from a single household without masks or physical distancing if the unvaccinated people are at low risk for severe disease.
- Skip quarantine and testing if exposed to someone who has Covid-19 but is asymptomatic.
My first vaccine is next Sunday. How many of you are still waiting for your first one?

I was expecting this - and am so happy! Our second doses were 2 1/2 weeks ago.
We had our little boys all day yesterday for the first time without masks - giving our daughter and son-in-law their very first "day off" since last March to celebrate their birthdays. Then we gathered after supper for gifts and cupcakes. As the old weekly paper "social columns" used to say, a wonderful time was had by all.
We still all wore our masks when we went out to choose Mommy's birthday flowers, and will continue to do so when in public. (A 2 year old in a mask is priceless!)
And we only know of one restaurant where we are willing to eat inside - the others are too big or too crowded, or not careful enough...

@sueinmn- Oh, isn't that great! I have to wait until probably mid-to-late April. But that's fine because our whole family (on my sister's side) will have been vaccinated and we have a long weekend than with them.
That will be wonderful! We are gathering for a patio lunch today with our 4 (also vaccinated) best friends. First time together in person since October. I'm excited!
@sueinmn Congratulations, Sue. This is an enormous milestone for you and the family/friends. You're truly blessed to have your family so close and to spend good, quality, fun time with your little guys. Sounds like pure joy to me! Several friends are getting their shots now and we're planning an outing next week at one of our favorite restaurants. We do lots of patio/outside eating, which I love and enjoy often......well, Sue, enjoy all your social activities. It is butterfly time soon.....blessings to you and all.elizabeth
I have a question for you. I received my second dose of Moderna on February 9th. I just had a blood draw for antibodies. The results showed "Nonreactive". I am still waiting to speak with the doctor to find out for sure, but my guess is I have no antibodies. I am a Kidney Transplant patient (Nov. 2006) and am immunosuppressed. Would it be safe to go visit my grandkids? Thank you.
My unmedical opinion...if your grandkids are not in the "risk group" and are young, and healthy...I would visit. Where your mask and they could too.. be clean safe and HAPPY!
Ask your doc to be sure.
Thanks Jeanne. I appreciate your response.
@jeffdavis0617- That's an excellent question. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm not sure that there is a credible answer to that yet. I think that you need to check with your transplant doctor, as you plan to do. I hope that you can!
Would you feel comfortable wearing a mask and seeing them? Are their parents vaccinated?
@sueinmn- How was lunch? How does it feel to be free like this once again? Doesn't having the vaccines show that they work in a setting like this?
It was WONDERFUL! We hugged, we ate, we talked, we laughed, we walked, we talked some more and we hugged again. A few adult beverages were consumed. After nearly 40 years of friendship, we were so delighted to be together again that nobody wanted to leave. We finally parted at 7 pm. I am still practically giddy today after two normal social interactions in 2 days. Life is good.
