COVID vaccines and neuropathy

I am 85 with small fiber neuropathy that is getting worse. My neurologist thought it would be a good idea for me to wait with the covid vaccine and not be first in line to see how it affected other people with neuropathy. Probably because it is a new technology. Has anyone had a problem with neuropathy after receiving the vaccine? If so, which vaccine?

I don't post very often but have been following al the posts re: neuropathy worsening. And my query is this: If you could go back in time, would you get the 2nd vaccine? I'm having some mild reservations & due to receive it in ~ 2 weeks. I didn't let my PMD know that I had such problems walking, in general, but didn't last that long. There was a bit more burning & restless legs. Plus got a low-grade temp. increase. I'm ok now but was a bit of rough patch. Got the Moderna. Have 2 older sisters....one got the Pfizer a couple of wks. before my 1st shot; had only a little fever & tiredness. Got the 2nd and great. The other sister got the Mderna a few days ago & has not, as of yet, sent an email. I take that back...she wrote later that evening after receiving it & reported both she & hubby had sore arms & a touch of nausea. I don't think she as had anything else or would have said. But I have had pre-existing neuropathy for a few years and neither of them are "lucky" to have that in their hx. Would someone(anyone) advise re; getting 2nd Moderna? Because a pharacist told me to maybe just get the J & J shot and be done w/ it that way. Thanks. I know you'll are not doctors but sounds like more symptoms than I had & am stewing a bit over whole thing. Kathy

I want to more about the J & J vaccine. I think it depends on the person on how you feel & with all my problems I am scared of it.

I'm getting my second dose of Maderna tomorrow. The first dose wasn't to bad. Sore arm for two days and fatigue on the day of injection. It's probably worth the risk.

@chezp169, This is indeed a very important decision and only you can make it. I get my second shot of Pfizer tomorrow. I am worried about it, but I want to be able to see my friends and eat in restaurants. I have lots of other medical issues, as do many of this group. If we gathered a list on all of our maladies, wouldn't that blow someone's mind? I believe tomorrow is also my last chance. I am taking it and I wish you the best as you make this critical decision. I do wish there had been a choice so I could take the J & J. Ah well, I am thankful I have this opportunity with Pfizer. Warm regards, @joybringer1

Joy, I totally agree with all of you who are reluctant to get their 2nd shot; I honestly don’t know what I would decide if I knew then what I know now. On one hand you have to consider husband, family, friends etc. because of uncertainty re: new strains and effectiveness of existing vacs, also desire for more freedom socially and less fear of contracting the virus; on the other hand there is the chance your health will suffer and pain could increase and you may be worse off than before in comparison to a possibly benign response to contracting COVD. Very hard choice but I might lean towards waiting if that is a viable possibility. We’ll still all be wearing masks for a while anyway. I am still not back to pre-vac. symptoms and my 2nd shot was Feb.10, I am better but some changes remain, I’m hoping they too will resolve. Helen

Thank you for replying. so I was just told that the first shot does not build antibodies we need both, I have a lot to think about.

I totally agree with you. I have my husband & family I have to worry about but they had there shots & I am pretty much home bound with all my issues. It is a hard choice bc I was considering it but if I get worse than I am now then I will not be able to function.

Hi @chezpl69 I believed antibodies were developed on the first dose but not enough. That is why the 2nd dose was needed for better immunity. I would be interested which source gave you that information. Was it a physician? Thanks.

.....just to jump in, while i am lying here reading a few notes; we are same in Canada and other countries... 'Inventing' medications and such takes time and something they get it right and sometimes not, sometimes problems surface earl or later. I often wonder at my old age which of my ailments are genetic, life style caused, or from medications in past..... every day it seems there is a different slant to the news on vaccines... some contradictory. I feel it is still a bit of a gamble... but the world cannot , not do 'something".... our small family is reading so many opposite things even from our government health unit... they are in fifties live close by, i am 77 and not in greatest health and spouse 68 and had open heart surgery; what to do? what to do? also the side effects vary so much because we are humans and all have different bodies.... there doesnt seem to be any guarantee but there does seem to be a majority who seem to be ok with any of the vaccines.... would we or our family be so lucky, we don't know. I am like you and some days cant function very well and any decrease in my physical and mental health of consequence, am not sure I would; yet my spouse says he will get whatever is offered, whenever; talk about different strokes for different folks. Wishing everyone who has yet to make the decision, the best ... I think it's only human to be concerned about all this if already ill.. although my 92 yr old neighbour had it done without question....I call her the iron lady! xxx

I’m in the same situation. However, had I been able to discuss my increased neuropathy symptoms after my first shot with my neurologist, I’m pretty sure I would have waited. Since I have an autoimmune disease and he said he wasn’t surprised my symptoms increased, that would have at least informed my decision. Then, with the not so stellar results of the John Hopkins antibody analysis on transplant patients receiving the vaccine, I definitely would have waited. I do hope researchers wake up and start looking into what is happening with those of us facing increased symptoms and if this effect is going to be permanent.

You are absolutely right. What is good for 1 person, may not be good for the other. I am going to wait but I just wish the CDC would look into more for people with Neuropathy.
I see they are checking out the pregnant ladies to see if it safe. They need to do more study.
