Anyone tried Dry Needling or Acupuncture for Pain or Neuropathy?

Posted by judypall @judypall, Mar 22, 2019

Has anyone had any luck with either dry needling or acupuncture? I have tried each of them one time. But made my feet tingle more. The PT who was administering the dry needling said that it goes through a cycle of pain to get better. I wasn’t too sure on that. Anyone?

Hi @nukhan
Yes, that approach is not unusual. The skin biopsy will almost certainly confirm the diagnosis that has already been made, and is therefore probably not necessary, when dealing with experienced neurologists. It is also expensive, and only done by a few labs, even here in the States.
I also have idiopathic small fiber PN. I beat up my neurologist until he agreed to do the test, which confirmed his diagnosis. As all of us are to an extent, I was desperate to find a treatable condition.
Unfortunately, nothing I have tried, including all the usual meds, helps very much, other than manipulating the environment that my feet live in.
What has been your experience?
Thanks
Jeff

Hi @jeffrapp thank you so much for your inputs. Sincerely appreciated. Also sorry for what you have been going through. I have avoided using any pain killers and prescribed medications but have used PEA cream, cbd cream, penetrix roll on, different kind of supplements including supplements and minerals as part of Protocol 525. While the burning pain in my soles has somewhat subsided, I have lately experienced severe numbness which has limited my ability to walk. Despite my limitation to walk, I jog every day for at least 10 kilometers. Be safe and protected

Hello @cue, Welcome to Connect. @banksnc49, @arnrob, @montanagary, and @judypall have discussed acupuncture or dry needling in another discussion and may be able to share their experience with you.

Are you able to share a little more about your symptoms or what you are currently using to treat your symptoms?

I had acupuncture for almost 6 months. It did help but could not help me enough to continue. Awesome but not financially affordable any longer.

@cue In the new Mayo book on Integrative Guide to Good Health by Bauer, Kermott, and Millman has 7 pages on Acupuncture. It says that for long time problems 1 or 2 treatments per week for several months may be required. For acute problems fewer treatments are in order. The book give good common sense advice of how to get the most benefit from the acupuncture treatments by lifestyle changes during the weeks of treatment.

I think there is potential for acupuncture to help, and I'm currently trying it myself. I have a supportive acupuncturist/TCM doctor, and I referred her to this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5733739/ where she is following the protocol laid out. The article seemed to be optimistic (all 10 patients had significant improvement in symptoms after long-term treatment) so it seems worth a shot!

Thank you for the article. After reading it I will try acupuncture also. I will be going to an MD but she closed her office for Jan due to a spike in Covid cases in this area.

I made an appointment for drying needling for my hip (the doctor says I need hip replacement but am not eager) and so I thought I'd try dry needling for pain in that area. Does anyone have experience with dry needling, and if so, did you experience relief?

I had 3-4 sessions for my hip about 6 yrs. ago which did not help plus it was very painful for me. I then had a cortisone shot which helped for 2 yrs. after which I had a total hip replacement. The surgery was a piece of cake, and I was walking unaided 2-3 wks. later. Helen
