Microdermabrasion: It is unsafe for heart disease patients?

Posted by basslakebabe19 @basslakebabe19, Oct 28, 2020

Does anyone have any knowledge of a possible negative impact on people with heart failure after a Professional microdermabrasion treatment? I ask this based on what I read in two instruction manuals for at-home skin care which suggested not using the electronic device if diagnosed with heart disease. I sent both back and received a full refund. I wish such warnings would be posted in their advertising rather than finding out after the order is placed and received.

Hi @basslakebabe19, Can you give us a little information as to why the instructions indicated not to use the device?

According to Medicine Net, “Overly aggressive microderm may cause breaks in skin and resulting post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Also overaggressive treatment may cause an increased risk of bruising (ecchymosis), especially if you are taking aspirin or other blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin) or clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix)."

Have you considered seeing a dermatologist for professional microdermabrasion?

I immediately think that they may be referring to someone with a pacemaker or defibrillator. Any electronic device is capable of disturbing either of those. Perhaps?

@basslakebabe19 Hi i thought i would confirm what @estrada53 said. I did have a pacemaker and was told that it wasn't that it was a problem.for the pacemaker but not worth the expense because it won't be accurate. The normal electrical signals the watches look for coming from.the heart are overpowered by the pacemaker signals. Im not familiar with the skin conditions you mentioned so there may be other reasons due to that.

I ordered two Facial devices from a catalog, one which resembled microdermabrasion. In the instruction booklets, both stated that people with heart issues should not use these devices. Nothing like that was stated in their advertising. I ended up returning them. My question refers to professional microdermabrasion; does anyone know if It is contraindicated for heart failure?

Hi @basslakebabe19, you will see that I added your most recent discussion to your previous post regarding microdermabrasion and heart issues. I also tagged it in Heart Rhythm Conditions here. https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/heart-rhythm-conditions/

The moderators on Connect do this so that you can easily link up with members that share the same condition or health issue and so you aren't constantly having to respond or look for multiple conversations in different groups. Do worry, the same discussion can be accessed in both the Heart and Blood Health and the Heart Rhythm Groups.

@basslakebabe19, have you contacted a professional microdermabrasion facility to see if they can give you more information on the benefits and the risks?

They are unaware of any issues. However, they haven’t researched it.
