What causes Clicking or Popping in Throat when Swallowing?

Posted by mushroom @mushroom, Oct 2, 2020

I was doing some neck massages a few days ago and then afterwards whenever I swallow, I feel a clicking/popping sensation and sound when my larynx moves up upon swallow. There is no pain at the moment but the popping sensation in my throat gives me anxiety whenever I swallow. Is this the result of the cartilage rubbing on each other? Is it from the hyoid bone rubbing the thyroid cartilage? Are there exercises that can fix this?

I had an anxiety attack and I read you should rub your left side of the throat. I did that n now I have a clicking in my throat. My cartilage moves around and I cany even eat. I have to reposition my neck to one side and then try and swallow. I feel really low and depressed. Will this go away. I read that thyroid cartilage deviation only go way with a surgery. I really cant deal with this. I'm so tired and stressed. I feel ok some times during the day. But I have started dreading dinner. I prefer to eat alone. Cos its embarrassing. I also am super depressed because of covid. I need a miracle. I need my old life back. I was so ungrateful Jesus but now I look for one miracle from you. Please help me someone if you have a doctor recommendation or if you know what is solution. I'm not being rude but please reply only if you have a valid solution or been healed from this thyroid cartilage deviation. Clicking of the hyoid.

I had my last, and final check up with my emt doctor a few weeks ago. There was a small hole in my ear drum that was treated with medications that didn't work. Finally a patch was put over the opening that is there permanently. I still get those sounds once in a while, but not nearly as bad or often. I guess it's another one of those "geezer" things that crop up.

I've been experiencing the same problem for over a year and a half, and haven't been able to find out what's wrong. If I lie face down and turn my head, or sometimes just swallowing while at an angle that's not exactly vertical I get that popping feeling, and what I haven't heard from anyone say that happens to me is that the displacement of whatever is moving sometimes doesn't get rectified until I twist my head in 17 different directions or punch my throat, and the effects of the pop can sometimes be felt over hours. Once it took a day. @mushroom Did you ever find out what the problem was from the ENT?

OMG I would not believe to find a thread where people have the same issue as me!

Did anyone get throat issues after vomiting? That's how mine started. After a very violent single vomit episode, I immediately started feeling super short of breath and then my throat started to feel like deviated or dislocated. Also I get a lot of trapped air, not only on my intestines and stomach, but also my esophagus!! When I eat or drink water, I instantly start burping a lot. I lost so much weight. It's extremely debilitating.

This is a place to give and get support. You said that you both have the same issue. May I ask if either of you have received a diagnosis yet?
