Non-Prescription Pain Relief
There is always a lot of discussion about pain relief using prescription medication but I would like to know if there is anything anyone has found over the counter that really works on pain. I guess I am talking more about muscle pain, or as I have fibromyalgia pain. I just went through a difficult weekend and I have no prescription medication to turn to. If anyone has something they have found that is nonprescription and has helped them I would appreciate their sharing.

@jackl Thank you. Do you take other medications for pain, etc.? Has so many precautions it makes me nervous. It is just a topical and how much goes into your system? They give you an amount to use.
Hi @summertime4, I was prescribed Diclofenac gel at one time and my physician suggested to apply liberally. I would suggest testing the gel out on a small patch of skin first as I had an allergic reaction to it and now am not able to use it.
Consider higher doses of CBD capsules, like 100 MG or higher. Early start for me with some benefit.
I would like to know the same thing. Find it ironic I can’t get my Norco for pain and I was responsible with them and only thing that gave me a quality of life. Just read an article that they are doing trials of LSD Microdoses from patients with chronic pain. Is it me, or is is this crazy. How in the hell is LSD better then an opioid that was low dose and worked. They keep failing to add those that abused opioids was taking more then prescribed and or buying from the streets that was laced with fentyl.
@farstat I agree 100 %. I am furtunate, at least for now, that my pain management clinic prescribes 90 percocets monthly for extreme pain from neuropathy and several other medical problems. However, this is not the case for everyone. So many people need the stronger medication and are unable to get it. That is awful. The people I know take their meds as prescribed and are able to do things they were unable to do. I know I am hurting when it is time to take the meds and when I take it I am able to play with my grand daughter and do a little around the house. Many OD's are from people going to the streets for pain relief and getting a mixture with other drugs. These people are not addicts seeking a new mood. The system is messed up.
@suzanne2 Hello. I'm Rachel and I am playing a bit of catch up on older posts. I see you started this conversation and @colleenyoung mentioned me for possible non prescribed pain relief products. My apologies for missing this. I've read through some of your posts and see @artscaping mentioned medical marijuana. I agree with her. I also read how you describe your deep aching, to the bone pain, and that you dont know where to find a prescribing Dr for medical marijuana. I'm wondering if you have further considered use of the product or made progress in finding a prescribing Dr? I have Small Fiber Polyneuropathy and also experience severe deep aching, mostly in my legs. When this ache flares, medical marijuana and heat are the only things that provide relief. I feel bad about your pain and am so impressed by your tenacity to keep persevering despite your ailments. I believe I read you taught children still?!? Remarkable! As far as you feeling like medical marijuana use makes you feel as if you are doing something illegal...I totally get that. Me too! It took me some time to wrap my mind around the fact that it was legal, it was justified, and it helped my pain. If you're feeling up to it, I'd love to hear how you are doing and if you've made any progress in finding non prescribed pain relief.
Best wishes to you,
Rachel
@rwinney Due to COVID I have been home since March 14 but I am now teaching kindergarten 3 days a week. I can't sit home, for me it is better if I can get out and do something to take my mind off of myself and my issues. I do have a friend who has a medical card and I have gotten some marijuana through her. I am not crazy about the side effects, but it does help the pain. I use a small amount when home and have no plans to go anywhere. I actually could go and buy it myself. Really don't need a card since it is legal here.
Suzanne2 and rwinney, Can you describe the pain reduction as a percentage. Moderate severe to severe pain it’s like 5 to 7/10. Living without pain for 12 hours per day is like 50% pain-free. The math is 12/24. What are the side effects that you experience? Have you’ve been able to reduce any of the side effects ?
@suzanne2 Great! I'm glad you have found help with your pain. If that works for you, then go for it!!
My only suggestion is that medical marijuana dispensaries, although there is more expense in getting legally certified, offer many product options for experimentation and provide pharmacists guidance on products and safety.
It's AWESOME that you are back teaching! I know that's a win, win for both yourself and the kids. Take care, stay safe

@123zale Hi there. Yes, I have pain reduction. It may be from 7-9 to 3-5. I also take hydrocodone, however 5mg of hydro does not always cut certain pain, like deep muscle aching. Plus, I chose to not increase my opiod dose but instead rotate medical marijuana. This was suggested by my PCP.
I am certified and purchase from a local dispensary. I use a tincture, under the tongue drops of oil. It took some time and experimentation in finding the best product and dosing. Side effects for me now are mild sleepiness about 4 hours in to my dose but only when I need a higher dose. Which by the way works excellent at night to help my insomnia. I may feel a slight sense of change in my brain. Nothing crazy, noone else would know, but I feel a slight difference on occasion. Keeping in mind that my intake is an extra strength 9.5 THC product. There are so many more options. This is why, in my opinion, working with pharmacists at a dispensary is so important as they offer guidance and support.
I have learned to make sure I have food in my stomach which helps prevent nausea. I can control my dose quite accurately using the oil dropper.
I wish you the best in your pain management search and hope I've helped answer your questions. Take care, stay safe.
