Brain Health: Keeping your brain active

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Jul 30, 2020

One of the things I really admired about my wife's mother was her humor and her really sharp wit even at the age of 90+. She lived with us for the last 7 or 8 years while she was alive. It was no secret how she kept her mental sharpness – she loved crossword puzzles and worked on various puzzles during the day. Crossword puzzles could be found laying around the house that she had started but not finished. Woe be to you if you penciled in any answers in one of her crossword puzzles. I occasionally like doing puzzles but they are not on my regular diet. My wife, much like her mother, loves doing crossword puzzles.

I recently ran across a free online lesson on How to Promote Brain Health from McMaster Optimal Aging Portal – How to Promote Brain Health: https://www.mcmasteroptimalaging.org/e-learning/how-to-promote-brain-health — Discover six ways you can promote brain health and reduce your risk of developing dementia.

What do you do to keep your brain healthy and active?

Our newspaper sent out a thick copy of all the puzzles that are good for your brain. I couldn’t even do one. Guess I’ll take it to the park and give it away!

I don't believe that for a second Becky @becsbuddy! But the nice person you are, finding some old geezers in the park and gifting them the puzzles might bring on some smiles. Of course you might not be able to see them if they have their masks on. 🙂

@becsbuddy Great idea! -- Let's see who the real puzzle solvers are (not me!!). I did just receive the book that was recommend earlier in the discussion - 399 games, puzzles & trivia challenges specially designed to keep your brain young - this afternoon but haven't opened it up yet. Saving it for a rainy day 🙂

As for puzzles, my husband and I have an agreement: He gets the crossword puzzles, and I get the sudokus in the daily and Sunday newspaper. They get progressively harder as the week progresses, and we joke that we will have a bad day or a good day, depending on whether we solve our puzzle.

I bought the book too. It's addicting and fun! I also do crossword puzzles every day, but not advanced, medium level I guess.

@jeannie26 I can't find my books on poetry think I put them in the library but here is one I've kept on written paper along with others also The Sound of Poetry on CD with other poets I won a certificate for this. Open Heaven

Open the doors
Open the windows
Let his glory soar
and cover all his people
as we Shout and Sing
To the King!
Let us believers cover
the earth to reach
all the souls at birth
So open Heaven for the King

Hi @lioness, You mentioned The Sound of Poetry on CD. Is this something you purchased or made yourself? Is it a collection of poetry of different types? It sounds like it would be a good CD to use at bedtime😊

By the way, although I still have about a third of the book left, (399 Games, Puzzles ... to keep your brain young”) I liked it so much that I discovered that the author has a sequel, “417 More Games, Puzzles ... to keep your brain young“ and ordered it. Comes in tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime. Ha! They are addictive for sure. A nice variety. Some easy enough to be rewarding for my aged brain.

I would offer Poetry Soup.com as a source of endless poetry reading.
PoetrySoup is a huge international community of over 30,000+ poets.
It also houses over 500,000+ poems written by a wide variety of amateur, professional, and famous poets.
I have been a "FREE" member for many years and have enjoyed reading and sharing my work on the site.
If you enjoy reading or writing at all levels of expertise this might be a place for you to spend some time. oldbuck
