Post Transplant Surgery and Early Recovery: What's normal?

Posted by btwest6 @btwest6, May 2, 2020

My husband is 12 weeks post liver transplant and has from day one had “hot flashes”, where he gets flushed (face gets red) and feels warm. We take his temp and he is normal. Anyone else with this experience? This new phenomenon seems to be one of the few new things he’s noticed. Otherwise feeing very good!

Wow. You have really had a tough time. How are you doing now? They have postponed my surgery based on the ultrasound results. I’m praying the splenic artery embolization worked after all once everything had time to settle down.

@gphetteplace quite a loaded question for me. After they did the corrective surgery it was then discovered I had a blocked/collapsed bile duct. It took four ERCPs to correct that all ending with hospital stays due to pancreatitis (contracted by the procedures). I had the stent removed June 22nd and I contracted pancreatitis again with another week long hospital stay. Good news is that the bile duct is now viable on its own. Downside yet another setback in recovery. I'm home now but it will take a few more weeks to get back to semi-normal. I'm just glad and thankful I have no more planned surgeries and can devote my time to getting healthy again. I'm sure your surgery will go well and the matter will be resolved.

@gayle1 hopefully the worst is behind you and you can start enjoying your new lease on life. Was the bile duct problem related to the lack of blood flow? My doctor told me the bulk of the liver gets better from both the hepatic artery and the portal vein, but the bile ducts are only supplied by the hepatic artery.

@gphetteplace thank you, I believe I am over the worst and looking forward to rebuilding my strength. I'm not sure what exactly was wrong with my bile duct. I believe it was blocked, maybe when it was surgically attached to the new liver? It could have been something due to the hepatic artery. I'm not sure how my labs turned of so I'll be in touch with my team sometime today.

@gphetteplace, Congratulations on the good report from your 4 month check-up! I know that the 4 month visit is a big event and a busy event.
How are you feeling now? Has the splenic artery embolization continued to show positive results? or How long until this settles down before a decisioin on possible surgery? I've got my fingers crossed for you.
