Why are we in lockdown in our homes is, of course, the Coronavirus. I believe we all who are in the Mayo family have various backgrounds, from the farmers of the Midwest to the health workers at Mayo, we can pool our backgrounds to solve this Coronavirus challenge. At the same time, we are posting on this site, we are making friends and with that - connections.

The Coronavirus challenge. Flatten the curve is the goal, more testing is the way to do this, though the current rate of producing and processing the kits are not going to meet this demand. But how do you meet this goal will require people of all backgrounds working together through the art of Synergy.

I used to tutor business at college, logistics was one subject I taught, other areas of subject matters included how successful companies are organized. Synergy is key, people of all backgrounds are needed to meet goals and solve problems.

I believe the best way to increase production and to process the kits is to ask people of all backgrounds directly what they have learned on their jobs to help with any problem, in this case, it would be finding ways to increase the rate of testing. People who work in production, truck drivers, farming and in the medical field among others would play a part and be asked, “what have you learned on your job to help meet this coronavirus (testing) challenge?”(People in the medical field could advise how much max time must be met between the swab to the actual processing of the swabs for the sample to be effective.

After getting the input and perfecting a plan, closed down, off-season medical devices/food processing plants/transportation systems would be retooled and reopened just for the goal of making those kits. The Department of Agriculture experts should get involved.

To process those kits, I believe health buses with the testing kits on board should be part of the equation. They would drive right up to patient's homes to get the swab; several health buses would be assigned to geographic areas. Medical rail/trucking processing depots nearby would be where the kits would be transferred to, and from there the kits would be transported to regional (several states) kits processing labs. Off-season farming/food processing/transportation systems could be where to focus on to meet this testing processing challenge.

@onamission Staying healthy and doing things to keep your immune system strong is a good idea. This article from Harvard Health offers some evidence-based advice.

- Helpful ways to strengthen your immune system and fight off disease https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/how-to-boost-your-immune-system
On selenium it states "There is some evidence that various micronutrient deficiencies — for example, deficiencies of zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E — alter immune responses in animals, as measured in the test tube. However, the impact of these immune system changes on the health of animals is less clear, and the effect of similar deficiencies on the human immune response has yet to be assessed." Research is ongoing and looks promising. However, selenium deficiency has not been tested with COVID-19 yet.

Staying healthy is important. Social distancing and washing your hands are key to helping the community spread.

My interest in Selenium came from an article showing it to help with Mercury we might ingest from fish.

@billcomiskey- Welcome to Mayo Clinic. Haha, that's a fantastic idea, spending less on unimportant things. My husband had to wait in line u until there were less than 25 people in the store this AM. Our Governor has really put some very strict rules in place. Take care and if you think of other things let us know!

I have found selenium offers a level of protection against viruses. Search on "virus selenium" or "coronavirus selenium" We are using 800 mcg of Selenomethionine a day. It's the same form of selenium found in Brazil nuts. I came to learn this while following up on a search on "canine Brazil nuts cancer" for a pet.

@onamission- Hello. Since very little is known about COVID-19 we don't know if selenium would help, unless your selenium is low. It's always best to check with your doctor. Be safe!

I have a question. I am not feeling well. I am not concerned about Corona being the cause. I am very dizzy even when sitting and having balance problems. I do have neuropathy which certainly influences my issues. I do not feel well and am concerned. I had a doctor's appt yesterday and I cancelled believing the threat of going to a doctor's office was more concerning. I woke up this morning and had difficulty getting from my bed to my dresser to hold on. This is the first time in years that I did not take a shower right after getting up. I had to sit for a bit, took medication and had a half cup of coffee. I then felt a little more stable and took a shower. My throat is sore. Anyhow I called back to the doctor and have an appt today which I will go to. Do we just put aside all other issues during this time and not leave the house. I live alone. My husband died 2 years ago. I am 74 years old. I am afraid that I will die from falling or other illness before the corona virus may hit me. Happy St PADDY'S Day. This will be one to remember.

@summertime4 , I think you did the right thing by calling your doctor to make a new appointment. To answer your original question about whether to stay home or go to the doctor, I think the best way to decide is to call your doctor's office and find out what they recommend. We have clinics in our area that are now doing appointments by telephone so that they can still respond to patients' needs without having people at risk come into their offices. I have a few routine appointments that I have cancelled and will reschedule after this is over, but for other things, I will call and ask them what to do. Also, my insurance company offers a teledoc service, which I might take advantage of, especially since the State of Colorado has told insurance carriers to waive the fee in order to encourage people to use it. Best wishes to you and I hope you are feeling better very soon.

@bob270- Hi. Unless you are eating a ton of fish and exhibit mercury poisoning it's doubtful that selenium will do much. There are a lot of suppositions out about what studies show with different elements. Also, we don't know as yet how this will react with COVID-19. We know so little about it right now. Take care, be safe!

Since I can’t drive for six weeks after undergoing reverse shoulder replacement surgery, I have learned to be patient when staying home ( except when friends rescued me for an outing.). I’m continuing to stay home to avoid the virus.

Hi, Summertime4, I have orthostatic hypotension and know what that dizzy, off balance feeling is like. If I'm not very close to something to hold onto or can sit down quickly, making fists seems to help circulation a bit. So glad you were able to feel more stable and will go for the new appt. today.

I am concerned about keeping a 6mos nephrologist and lab appt in a couple of weeks and will probably cancel that mostly because my annual labs 2 mos ago showed stable kidney values. It will be a situation by situation decision for many of us going forward I suspect as we decide which appts to keep and which to postpone. If a new/different health issue presents itself for me, I'll make an appt. but this particular one, I feel safe in postponing.

So glad Ginger opened this COVID-19 forum for members to share about ways we are coping with these uncertain times.

@merprep and fiesty 76 Thank you for responding so quickly. I did go to see the doctor. The waiting room was weird. No one in it. A few people came in while I was waiting. Well, fluid in one ear and apparently an infection in the other. This can be causing dizziness and awful sore throat. Strep test came back negative. I have a prescription for augmentin, recommended Flonase also. I will see if this helps. If not he will look further. His nurse told me they are not seeing any people with respiratory issues that may be part of the corona virus. These people are being told to stay in and go to ER if necessary. He said the corona virus is viral and there is not much to be done as with other viral viruses. Hospitalization is needed for some. Thank you again and let's keep this forum open. I admit I am frightened. not so much about the virus, but about people. We will destroy ourselves with selfishness, ignorance and hate . The toilet paper incidents is the beginning.

Good afternoon @basslakebabe19. I hope your desire to be outside means that your shoulder is healing well. Have you started Physical Therapy? May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
