COVID-19 Coronavirus and Lung Health: What can you do?

Posted by Merry, Alumni Mentor @merpreb, Mar 1, 2020

Good morning- I have hesitated to post anything about this new and dangerous group of viruses because I am certainly not qualified to discuss any science. And certainly not about genetics and viruses. But I can discuss how we can lessen our fears, be as prepared as we can and very simply if we get it, what do we do?

First of all the COVID-19 is the name for many similar viruses. It's not just one. It is believed to have started by bat guana in Wuhan, China. Wuhan is the very large capital of Central China’s Hubei province. It is a commercial center divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers. This virus spread very quickly, perhaps like the flu. And because of travel. it is spreading throughout the world, and it is here in America. This is a group of very dangerous viruses has the potential to kill and has. Many of us with breathing problems must be very diligent to protect ourselves as much as we can.

You can help protect yourself by doing these things:

Keep your hands clean. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your cough and sneezes to keep germs from spreading to others. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces routinely. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick.

If you have these symptoms please see a doctor: Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath

I know that a lot of us have at least two of these symptoms already. So if your shortness of breath or your coughs become worse and you feel ill then it is time to seek medical help.

Here are several sites that have addressed the Coronavirus for more information.

If you know of anyone who is ill please stay away from them. Passing along the facts about this group of viruses is the best that you can do to help others avoid getting ill.

@johnbishop

I heard a report in an interview on TV about digestive issues - diarrhea.

@johnbishop @merpreb I also read an article about digestive issues yesterday. It said that people who start with digestive issues do not seek care as soon as others because very few realize that can be a sign of COVID-19.

The British Association of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT UK) say asymptomatic patients - ones who do not have a fever or a cough - could show a loss of smell or taste as symptoms after contracting coronavirus. A few of the NBA basketball players reported the same symptoms. Just another thing to watch out for.

@johnbishop- The one thing that irritates me about this report is its use of statistics. They are for only special groups of people and do not cover everyone who has the virus. And this virus is so fluid that in a split second the percentages can change.

Thanks John, not the news we want to hear but impt to read and share with others about the digestive issues. Almost 50% presenting does not sound encouraging. Especially for those of us with chronic and other underlying health issues. Better to know than not!

That’s what I dislike about all the numbers being thrown around - easy to manipulate statistics if you have the smarts.

@johnbishop- Exactly John. My younger sister is a worrywart..witha capital W. She really takes the cake. She was spewing stats to me this AM and I told her that they would drive her nuts. I hope that she listens to ignore them. They only mean something to the test people for a particular study. We won't know the true figures until this is over and then some.
The most important thing is that the longer people do not comply with staying home and social distancing the longer we will have to do it.

@johnbishop Well, that convinces me that my daughter's test for Covid-19 was a "false negative" as she suspected - she has every syptom right down the line including this! I'm sure she'll be in touch with her work and/or her pulmonologist for retesting once she sees this. But she reported less respiratory distress this morning, so we're hopeful she is turning the corner.

Yes, I agree as I think this virus has a mind of it's own. It seems to have a higher I.Q. than the owns we know about. There are so many ways it is the same as the others we know about but then it also has many other ways that it does it's deadly dance.

This is an amazing YouTube video from Mayo's radio station. Dr. Gregory Poland is an expert in Infectious disease and is the head of Mayo's Vaccine Research Group. He is clear, honest and explains so much, dispelling previous information as we learn more.
