Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76, @ amandajro. If I had a vote and I don't.....I'd vote 'YES' ...as you well know, I tend to be one of those adult ADD children our moderators must watch carefullly. Fiesty, it's tough to just talk about walking...we see flowers or where there will be flowers and our minds run to that topic, we see snow and think ice cream, I get hot and think specialty drink......see, Amanda? We have a tough time staying on topic!!! We're too interested in the world, a good thing for our health, and we're too interesting to our new friends..It's Becky's fault! She started this thread...blessings...elizabeth

@ess77, Yes, Elizabeth, I'm another of those also on the mentors' High Watch List! vbg Thanks, Elizabeth, for being our "Supreme Defender of the Off Topics Ramblers"!! Surely your post will guarantee or at least strengthen a reprieve from our most esteemed Amanda, @amandajro? But now we may be in trouble with another favorite, Becky, @becsbuddy for making our walks such a tempting opportunity to branch off on other topics??? Hope sunshine touches all today.

@imallears, I laughing out loud!! Yes! Both bone and blood meal are sold and used for fertilizing bulbs. No vampires met personally (thank the skies!!) Mary, but I've learned the hard way that although squirrels leave my daffodils, day lilies, iris and hyacinth bulbs alone, they still dig like crazy around these bulbs/tubers after I've spread the powdered bone or blood meals.

Oops, @imallears, @ lioness, Just reread the earlier post about bone/blood meal and meant to say that squirrels cause most damage to tulips bulbs. They leave the others intact. Scattered puts it mildly for my early morning posts!

@imallears , @fiesty76 Oh, Mary, you are sooooo right! I have lots of hats, use 70-100 neutrogena sunscreen plus facial suncreen and don't get spray tan or use a tan cream anymore. Haven't found one yet that doesn't turn a bit yellow. May be my skin, as I'm very fair and burn easily.....blisters all over as a teen/young adult and really dangerous for me. Thankfully, no melanoma yet, but I'm ck'd yearly and keep a watch for anything. I have to watch the tops of my feet! Sandals.......they can really hurt with neuropathy issues, too.
But, I still have a Vit D3 deficiency, so I stay on top of that, too. Mary, we wear sunglasses every time we go outside, correct? Those UV rays are bad for our eyes, plus I have sarcoid in my eyes and the light is a beast....but I can't survive w/o it....gloomy, gray days add up to depression for me if there're too many in a row. Have to have the sun.....blessings all. elizabeth

@imallears, @ess77, Well, drat it all, I managed to erase an earlier reply. When going through some rough times, I used to go to dept stores to try on all the hats and then pop over to a card shop to read the humorous cards. Both always brought some smiles and lifted my spirits!

A big fan of hats for all seasons and reasons. my closet door rack sports a large variety. Not only are they great for sun protection but also camouflage for those bad hair days and just whenever one feels the need for an added bit of sass, right?

Another sunshine girl, I am thankful that dark/drear days here are usually of short duration and far between. Additional Vit. D3 is necessary too for my osteoporosis.

When a shrub trimmer rang the doorbell to tell me he'd finished and gave me the job cost, tears started pouring down my cheeks. Alarmed the fella said: "Oh, maam, I can reduce the price if that would help." I quickly assured him that I 'd just forgotten my sunglasses and my eyes were extremely sensitive to sunlight and bright lights. Never forgot his kindness but it was also funny. Sunglasses are a top priority for me, too. I have several pairs stashed near doors and in the car. Hoping for a bit of sun for all today.

@fiesty76, @imallears Do I detect a hint of jealousy from our hot, dry desert friend????? Mary, it is nice to dip the toes in the Altantic or Gulf.....although, I don't get to the ocean anymore and do miss it! Getting older can be a trip! blessings, stay hydrated, elizabeth

@imallears, Yup! Elizabeth, @ess77, caught me green with envy at your 5 min. walk to water! With the exception of 2 yrs in Duluth and discovering the joys of being near Lake Superior, I love trips that include being near large bodies of the life giving stuff. Otherwise, sigh, whine, I just have to "make do" with tiny playa and man made lakes. So Mary, wiggle your wet toes for the rest of us next time ok?

Just got back from my 2.5 mile walk on this beautiful windy, no humidity 65 degree day. Almost lost my baseball hat at one point.
I am not dipping any toes into the Anclote river woman! Gators might think they’re chicken nuggets. Yes we are lucky we can walk on several beaches near us although my daily walks don’t take me near any bodies of water unless I detour down to the boat ramp in my subdivision. I have always lived along the East Coast and am very glad to be on Gulf side of this state too. But I would take lakes and streams manmade or not.
I remember walking near the Atlantic Ocean in Long Island in the middle of winter with the kids when they were young. The first day I retired 8 years ago my fam and I went and walked Clearwater beach with our morning coffee ...so liberating...couldn’t believe I wasn’t stuck in an office on a gorgeous May Day.

Sun is out, doors are open, AC is off! Woot woot.

@jakedduck1, Yowsa, Jake! I am afraid this is a bit too much for us. Neither of us knows how to dress a deer (or undress?) and I don't really care for the taste of venison. I suppose we could throw the body in our creek, but the smell would overwhelm us. The vultures are not here to help us. There was a dead deer in the creek once. I discovered this while walking our dog. Another time, a friend came over and as soon as she stepped out of her car, she said "What's that smell?" I told her it must be something dead in the creek but we had not investigated. Her imagination took off and she said "What if it's a body?" I said I just hope it is not and let it go. @joybringer1

@jakeduck1 venison is a mainstay of our family’s diet and deer hunting is like an annual holiday! I do not hunt anything and never even saw such a thing until I moved to northern Minnesota and met my husband (and had 2 sons)! If there’s an animal to hunt here, I think they’ve gone after it and we eat it (other than squirrel-although I have it once or twice). My rule is no hunting on our property (3acres)-we live in the woods....they all think I was unfair....hehe. I gave up any hope of having a garden or flowers as deer ate everything. When my sons were little, we saw a doe with twin fawns that ate my geraniums every time they bloomed. They named the doe “Flower.” It was sweet. When they got older, dead deer hung from the rafters in our garage every fall and they bursted with pride with their accomplishments. Providing food for the family.....bonding with their father and the hunting party! What a strange place I live in🤪

A family of Bambi Assassins. I bet you’ve eaten those cute fawns and Flower too.
I guess it needs to be done but I couldn’t do it. My Dad went deer hunting but I doubt I ever ate it.

@jakedduck1 I abhor hunting for sport but when people do it because they need to supplement their food with the meat from what they shoot then I'm OK with it. Trophy hunting turns my stomach though, deer heads hung over fireplaces, etc. I think these days we are so much more aware of the fact that animals really do have feelings and do feel pain than people used to be.
