Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi Lori. Yep, my doc plans to call me again today to check up on me (it's only Day 2, geez!). I live on Vancouver Island so our winter is usually moderate and not too snowy. We had snow last week, but it was gone in a day or two. Ice can be a problem because we are in the rain forest, but I will be walking after lunch, so not a worry most days. I wear my "Keen" footwear, which are a great hiking shoe. Loved your post!
@jakedduck1 Ok, I’m absolutely laughing out loud with your story! This could have been a dinner conversation at my childhood home! My parents were in their 40s when I was born so there actually was a bit of validity to ‘some’ of their stories! Not sure if they were meant to motivate me or garner appreciation for their endurance. Either way, I still had to walk to school!!! Remember when you start out on a long walk, you still have that return trek! 😉 Lori
@jude07 My inner child IS going outside. I have my gear ready to go! Heavy snow, 29 degrees and no wind! It’s perfect. Aw, ice skating. Haven’t done that in years. Did you skate often as a child? Adult? Love your idea of the wool boot skates. My skates would also need to be accompanied by elbow pads and wrist guards, bubble wrap for my bum and a helmet!! Pretty, huh?
@artist01 Your doctor will be so delighted!! Now you’ll have something to share with her. Neat, huh? Enjoy your afternoon walkeze! Take care, Lori.
Yeah, enjoy the outdoors, I am procrastinating. It is snowing here and I have a long drive and sidewalk, besides the upper and decks to clean off.
I used to love to skate, however because we lived on a farm I didn’t get there often. So when I knew my Dad was going to town I would throw my skates under his seat, then I would get way down on the floor behind him as well.
Once we got to town (8 miles) I would pop up and beg him to drop me off at the rink. (Of course he probably knew I was there all along)
It was a great game to play with him and I used to play “crack the whip” with all of the other kids, shear fun. There was a warming house in those days, next to the rink, where we would warm up. Always looking for a little adventure, I guess.
PS, I also have Merrill hiking shoes for the tougher days!
Yes, my doc was delighted when she called me this morning. I told her about posting on the Mayo site and that I've now received literally countless "likes" and congratulatory or motivated posts. It made her day, and mine too. I can't thank all you wonderful members enough for posting your responses. A hundred thankyous to each and every one of you! And I love your stories! Happy walking, everyone!
@jude07 ice skating! That’s like walking but you’re supposed to look graceful! Not me. I remember having to earn a skating badge in Girl Scouts (that was a long ago century!) My parents were totally non-athletic so we dint do much fun sports as kids. But now, I love walking! Cold wind today but no snow. Have a good day!
@artist01 it sure sounds like you have a great doctor! And you, for taking the initiative to get walking! Especially now. Winter, snow, cold, and ice just take all the fun out of walking but it sure adds a challenge! Keep up the good work-you’ve inspired me. Becky
So funny, @jude07! So funny! It's wonderful to have a little humour in the midst of all our health concerns.
